Primary Purpose of Department
Within the Division of Business Affairs, the Financial Services department provide central accounting and budgeting services for the university and its financial affiliates, including its foundations and related entities. This department is comprised of the following core office/sub-units: Financial Systems Support, Controller's Office, Budget & Financial Analysis Office, Treasury Services, and Materials Management (including Purchasing, Receiving & Stores, and Inventory Control & Surplus).

The Controller's Office provides central business support/oversight for accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, business process management and compliance, e-Commerce, financial reporting, fixed asset accounting, payroll, tax management, travel and other business payments and reimbursements.

Within the Office of the Controller, the Tax & Payroll work unit manages the University's strategies, policies, people, processes, technologies, compliance, controls, and reporting related to tax reporting/compliance and payroll. Supervise payroll operations and essential tax compliance duties, including independent contractor review, UBIT analysis and tax return, sales and withholding tax returns preparation, treaty analysis and general review of foreign nationals, and 1099 quarterly/monthly review.

The Tax Unit manages tax compliance, serves as a resource to the university community on tax issues, ensures timely and accurate filing of University tax returns, consults with departments on employee and independent contractor determinations, and develops necessary procedures and reporting systems to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations. Tax Office staff advise international students and scholars on tax treaty benefits, tax withholding and reporting requirements, and provide guidance to departments regarding payments to vendors and employees from other countries.
Primary Purpose of Position
The University's Tax Accountant manages tax matters related to foreign nationals' employment with the University, determining income tax status and treaty benefits when applicable. This position works with the Assistant Controller-Tax & Payroll on various tax matters, including income and sales tax returns and filings, Form 990T, unrelated business income, employee classification, withholding on payments and 1099 reporting, and departmental training.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Manage tax matters related to foreign nationals' employment with the University. Determine income tax status and treaty benefits when applicable.
  • Work collaboratively with the Assistant Controller-Tax & Payroll and key employees throughout the University (including in Payroll and other Financial Services units, Human Resources, and the Office of International Programs) on various tax matters.
  • Assist with and/or complete income and sales tax returns and filings, including forms 990-T, W-2, 1042, 1099, E-500, unemployment reporting, etc.
  • Make determinations on employee classification (independent contractor v. employee) based on provided information.
  • Monitor vendor and student payments for withholding requirements and 1099 reporting.
  • Lead campus training courses on tax issues.
  • This position may also be asked to implement or assist on special tax related projects. This position should recommend process improvements to improve compliance and efficiency within the tax function.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in accounting.
  • At least 2 years of tax and/or accounting experience.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Higher education experience.
  • Experience using Calculus Sprintax and Banner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Federal and State tax filing systems
