Apprentice Engineer: Works under the supervision of a Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer or Certified and Non-Certified Engineer. This classification is distinguished from that of a Certified and Non-Certified Engineer not so much by the work they perform but by the supervision they receive. This Classification is strictly a trainee. They shall not stand a shift or in any way be responsible for operating conditions in the building. Notwithstanding the preceding sentence, an Apprentice Engineer shall be allowed to work independently (without direct supervision) in any and all areas in which the Chief Engineer, Chief Operating Engineer or Assistant Chief Engineer deems such Apprentice Engineer to have demonstrated the ability to safely and properly perform assigned specific tasks. During their term of Apprenticeship, the Apprentice shall be subject to the terms and condition of the "Apprenticeship Standards of the Operating and Maintenance engineer Trade for Southern California" which provides that they shall receive such instruction and experience in all branches of this trade as is necessary to develop a practical and skilled mechanic versed in the theory and practice of the Operating and Maintenance Engineer Trade. They shall also perform such other duties in the shop and on the job as are commonly related to such an Apprenticeship.
Selection of candidate for Apprenticeship shall be in accordance with Title 8, Chapter 2, Subchapter 1, Article 5, Section 215 of the California Administrative Code as enumerated in the "Apprenticeship Selection Procedures" of the Aforementioned Apprenticeship Standards.
