Sustainable Diets Initiative Summer Intern

World Resources Institute (WRI)
United States, D.C., Washington
10 G Street NE (Show on map)
Jan 28, 2025

About the Program

WRI advances research-based solutions to ensure the world can feed a growing population while protecting nature and curbing climate change. We develop cutting-edge research and innovative partnerships to produce more food while protecting and restoring ecosystems and shifting toward lower-carbon consumption patterns. Our research identifies a menu of solutions to the world's food production and consumption problems.

WRI's behavioral science team explores ways to increase people's purchasing of plant-based foods, and help consumers waste less of the food they buy by leveraging the latest evidence from consumer research, behavioral economics, and psychology. The team synthesizes existing evidence and conducts original research to identify and scale promising solutions to shift consumers toward more sustainable food-related behaviors. The findings from our work also feed into WRI's Coolfood program, designed to help cities, institutions, organizations, and businesses source and offer more sustainable foods.

This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days per month in the office. You can be based in our office in Washington DC Office. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position. To be eligible for this position, you must be a resident of DC, Maryland or Virginia at the start of employment.

You will be supported by the Sustainable Food Initiative team. You will report to Stacy Blondin, Food Program Behavioral Research Associate.

Internship Learning Outcomes:

You will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Developing and implementing a systematic literature review protocol on strategies that food retailers can employ to promote sustainable food purchasing/consumption among customers.
  • Extracting and synthesizing data from peer-reviewed journal articles on behavioral science-based approaches to shifting consumer choice in food retail settings.
  • Assisting in the development of a framework to synthesize the food retailer strategies identified into a comprehensible tool.

* Familiarity with data analysis or visualization software desirable but not necessary.

* Familiar with how to calculate and interpret basic statistics, e.g. mean, median, variance.
