JOB SUMMARY



  • Using composting KSA's develop, modify and maintain an efficient operational system for the windrow/ASP composting system located at the Landfill.
  • Ensure the compost facility and compost products meet and maintain regulatory compliance. Adjust strategy and operational activities to meet objective(s).
  • Manage facility and operations to maximize odor control and act as the point of contact with 24/7 responsibility to respond/log queries and interact with stakeholders and the public.
  • Use KSA to develop standard composting operating procedures and maintenance program.
  • Monitor & modify production as needed to adjust for specific conditions (weather, feedstock, technology, equipment status, seasonality and market needs).
  • Ensure compost facility maintains productivity (volumes and budgets), and generates finished compost products that meet company/client specifications.
  • Develop/maintain tasks for the composting system including; receiving, mixing, loading/unloading, curing, screening and storage.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors for project support and maintenance activities; give direction to the subcontractors, track project costs and manage their role in the project
  • Ensure that the facility operates consistently to meet external client expectations (regulatory compliance, production capacity, equipment operations, maintenance, and grounds)
  • Staff training. Develop materials and present information to staff on the composting process with emphasis on how tasks impact production and productivity.
  • Develop protocols (methods and equipment) to collect and record multiple biological, physical and chemical data of the feedstocks, composting process and end-product(s). Including temperature, bulk density, % solids, respiration, stability etc... Train staff on the operation and maintenance of instruments and tools needed to support these tasks
  • As directed, conduct comprehensive tours of the facility and participate in public outreach with identified parties.
  • Maintain professional appearance, and use personal protection equipment (PPE) when required


Competency: As the senior technical resource on multiple aspects of composting, the position is expected to have a high level of KSA on large-scale composting operations. Ability to create and work within budgets for the tasks needed to maintain the facility and production. Technical expertise requires the party to be detail oriented, computer literate, and understand the importance of accurate data management. Strong technical, written and oral communication skills. Flexibility and dependability required, along with a willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups.

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in outside weather conditions and with organic wastes. The employee will be exposed to hot, cold, and wet conditions, as well as potential fumes, airborne particles, odors and conditions typically found around large volumes of organic wastes.

Physical demands: To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, climb and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to balance, stoop, knee, crouch, crawl and walk. The employee must occasionally lift. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel: Occasional travel depending on job assigned.

Preferred education and experience: College level course work in a physical science or engineering preferred. Must have valid driver's license. Currently have or will attain within 1 year the US Composting Council (USCC), Certified Compost Operation Manager (CCOM) credential. Experience in operating composting facilities, agriculture and/or construction equipment. Experience working with compost and the composting process.
