Control Systems Modeling and Simulation Engineer

Position Summary:


As Control Systems Modeling and Simulation Engineer, you will support the NAVFAC EXWC Control System Cyber Engineering (CSCE) division located in Port Hueneme, CA.

Clearance Required:

  • Must be a US citizen with a DoD Secret security clearance


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain simulation models that replicate the behavior of normal operation, site-specific load and use profiles, and potential hardware failures.
  • Track and eliminate deviations between normal behavior and their non-real-time digital twins.
  • Create failure mode simulations to test the robustness of control software and ensure it can handle various fault conditions effectively.
  • Collaborate closely with controls engineers to integrate simulations with control algorithms, providing a virtual environment for testing and validation.
  • Analyze simulation results to identify potential weaknesses or vulnerabilities in control software, and work with the team to address them.
  • Continuously improve simulation tools and methodologies to increase the accuracy and reliability of the models, automating their use.
  • Optimize model execution appropriately to balance computation time and cost with product benefit.
  • Support the development of test cases and scenarios that stress control software under various operational conditions, including extreme edge cases.
  • Document simulation methodologies, test results, and recommendations for improving system resilience.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other team members on best practices in system simulation and fault modeling.


Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Experience in control systems engineering or related field
  • Must have at a minimum IAT lvl 2 compliant certification (CompTIA Security+ or equivalent)
  • Strong understanding of control systems theory, including linear systems analysis, feedback control, and state-space representation.
  • Proficiency in simulation software like MATLAB/Simulink, or other relevant modeling tools
  • Programming skills in languages like C++, Python, or Fortran
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to interpret complex data and generate meaningful insights
  • Strong communication skills to effectively convey technical concepts to stakeholders


Physical Demands and Expectations:

  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing; occasional prolonged sitting
  • Ability to speak, read, hear and write, with or without assistance
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment
