Working under the direction of an Assistant Librarian, the Reference Assistant helps library users with library collections, spaces, services, and technology. Answers informational, directional and basic reference inquiries and troubleshoots basic software and hardware in person, by telephone, email, text, and IM/chat from the reference desk. The Reference Assistant supports librarians with clerical tasks and special projects.

Job Description

  • Provides excellent customer service while at the Reference desk. Answers miscellaneous questions in person, by telephone and IM/Chat.

  • Assists students with basic microcomputer software questions (e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.) as well as hardware needs (e.g. printers, scanners, etc).

  • Learns new computer technology as it becomes available in the library.

  • Refers students to a librarian if the student has questions about finding information, doing research, etc.

  • Performs clerical tasks as requested by librarians (such a gathering statistics, checking online access to electronic resource, etc.)

  • Works on special projects as assigned.

  • Responds appropriately to situations without direct supervision.

  • Reports to work based on an established work schedule.

  • Works in a friendly manner with co-workers, library staff and supervisors.

  • Greets library patrons, answers the telephone, and appropriately records messages.

  • Inventories and replaces supplies as needed, such as toner cartridges & paper in printers

  • Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

  • Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.

Rate of Pay $16.00 hourly

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of computers and software application programs.

  • Knowledge of standard library practices.

  • Knowledge of filing and recordkeeping procedures and basic math.

  • Knowledge of customer service principles.

  • Ability to perform data entry, typing, and word processing.

  • Ability to research records to verify and update materials.

  • Ability to operate general office equipment.

Physical Demands

Occasional lifting of heavy books and equipment is required. Ability to stand and walk for long periods, to move book carts, and lift up to 20 pounds. Ability to stoop, bend and reach.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent to a high school diploma plus three years of experience in a library, customer service or related field .
