Summer Hours 6:00 am - 2:30 pm; Monday - Friday.
Winter Hours 6.30 am - 3.00 pm; Monday - Friday.
Occasional overtime as needed.
This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Grounds Services Technician/Playing Fields will assist in maintaining the University facilities in good working order and maintaining an overall pleasant working, teaching and learning environment. This position is to support the associated grounds and landscaping requirements due to the development of expanded highly maintained landscaped areas of campus. This position will be mainly looking after the sports fields and surrounding areas. The maintenance includes all procedures associated with NCAA sports fields including line painting and clay infield work, herbicide, fungicide, insecticide and fertilization treatments which require basic knowledge of materials, elemental horticulture, and the skill to fulfill these duties: litter control, weed control, trimming of undergrowth and pruning of trees, rip rap and erosion repair, upkeep of the drainage structures and snow and ice removal along walkways and steps.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Some knowledge of grounds keeping procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from high school, or completion of its equivalency, and two (2) years of related grounds experience.
Essential Job Duties
The Grounds Service Technician/Playing Fields performs under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor/Playing Fields Supervisor.

  • All maintenance procedures associated with NCAA division one sports fields
  • Plant flowers, bulbs, trees, and shrubs in accordance with plans.
  • Cultivate, mulch, and remove weeds from established plant beds.
  • Prune trees and shrubs to ensure proper health and vigor of plant material.
  • Fertilize trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawn areas following the established fertilization program.
  • Seed newly prepared lawn areas and reseed established lawn areas as required.
  • Apply chemical spray applications to plant material under the direction of a licensed pesticide applicator.
  • Monitor and train others in the proper application of herbicides or pesticides as necessary.
  • Mow grass, trim trees and shrubs, remove the trash and remove snow as needed.
  • Contribute to the overall appearance and condition of the university's buildings, academic and office spaces.
  • Assist in maintaining the University facilities in good working order and maintaining an overall pleasant working, teaching, and learning environment.
  • Support the associated grounds and landscaping requirements due to the development of expanded highly maintained landscaped areas of campus.
  • Maintenance to include: herbicide, fungicide, insecticide, and fertilization treatments which requires basic knowledge of materials, elemental horticulture, and the skill to fulfill these duties; litter control, weed control, trimming of undergrowth and pruning of trees, rip rap and erosion repair, upkeep of drainage structures and snow and ice removal along walkways and steps.

Other Work Responsibilities

  • Supervise lesser skilled employees in duties assigned in absence of supervisor.
  • Supervise or serve as lead worker to rake and mulch leaves, clear snow from walkways and parking lots.
  • Team lead or working supervisor for the upkeep and repair of sidewalks, parking lots, grounds keeping equipment, pools, fountains, fences, planters and benches, care for athletic fields.
  • Tasks to include: Litter Control, Tractor Operation, Weed Eating, Edging, Blowing, Mowing, Seeding and Fertilizing, Installation, Watering, Irrigation Repair, Operation of Irrigation, Pruning, Pesticide Application, Riding Mowers, Tree Removal, Operation of Backhoe and Skid Steer, Storm Clean up and Snow Removal.
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning and regular saws, hedge and brush trimmers and axes, as well as power lawnmowers, chain saws, snow blowers and electric clippers. May use heavier equipment such as tractors and other vehicles.
  • Operate machines and equipment such as trucks, tractors, and other gardening and grounds maintenance type equipment.
  • Perform more advanced grounds operations including but not limited to aerating, over seeding, mowing and fertilizing with tractors and other specialized equipment.
  • Use irrigation methods and control systems to adjust the amount of water consumption and reduce waste.
  • May apply fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides either occasionally or on a normal periodic basis.
  • May be required to obtain, mix and transport chemicals and similar products and apply them in the correct amount, and in the correct areas. Clean the application equipment, and return it to inventory.
  • Move office furniture and help with special event setups and tear downs.
  • Report to Facilities Management when called to assist with clearing and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, steps and other areas of obstructions, such as snow, ice trees, etc. during inclement weather, usually requires overtime hours, weekends, and holidays. Sometimes requires early morning travel in marginal weather conditions and long working hours.
  • Make minor repairs to lawn mowers, sprayers and other grounds equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Two or more years of experience in professional turf-grass maintenance. (golf course/NCAA division 1 sports fields).
  • Two years' experience in progressive grounds/landscape maintenance fieldwork is preferred for position.
  • Experience marking out and painting sports fields.
  • Advanced pruning/plant care techniques
  • Experience operating and maintaining Reel mowers; and operating heavy grounds machinery.
  • Experience and ability to oversee and supervise the installation and maintenance of landscaped areas, transplant, mulch, fertilize, and water flowering plants, trees, shrubs, and lawns.
  • Experience and/or ability to coordinate quality and direction of work as a lead Grounds Services Technician.
  • Experience and/or ability to coordinate and schedule grounds maintenance work and may act as lead worker on assigned tasks and Grounds Maintenance projects.
  • Comprehensive verbal and written communication skills needed for position.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications

  • Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification(s).
  • Valid NC State driver's license or ability to obtain.
