General Information:

James Madison University X-Labs is seeking a part-time Lab Manager for its makerspace. JMU X-Labs is a fast-paced innovation hub that uniquely serves the entire JMU community and external partners through courses, research and creative practice, workshops, esports, and work-based learning experiences. Grounded in design thinking, it is a space for converging cross-disciplinary teams, networks, and initiatives that respond to complex and grand challenges. The vision for the Lab in JMU X-Labs is that it is a thriving dynamic hub of making for the JMU community that might not otherwise have access to advanced making and prototyping equipment and expertise. While X-Labs is not the only space on JMU campus with certain makerspace equipment and technology, the Lab specifically supports X-Lab classes, research, workshops, and entrepreneurial prototyping through our unique cross-disciplinary, collaborative programming. It does not support production of materials related to existing businesses or hobby-level projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Lab Manager reports to JMU X-Labs Programs and Initiatives Manager.

Responsibilities include:
* Oversee all makerspace operations and open lab hours
* Participate in visioning, strategic planning, organization, and preparation of The Lab for upcoming semesters, projects, and events
* Coordinate and perform maintenance of machines and tools in the Lab and inventory and order supplies.
* Vision, design, develop, and facilitate workshops and programs in the Lab
* Provide safety and equipment training, including record keeping, to people who use the Lab
* Aid in data management, processing, and tracking for events, open lab, workshops, classes, and research
* Problem solve and troubleshoot technologies for JMU X-Labs classroom technologies as backup to X-Labs operations manager
* Collaborate with Programs and Initiatives Manager to help design, develop, and execute events in JMU X-Labs

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
* Demonstrated experience managing or working in a makerspace, workshop, or similar environment that involves hands-on use of tools, equipment, and technology
* Passion for creative collaboration
* Design experience
* Proficiency with tools and equipment commonly found in maker spaces (laser cutters, electronics, AR/VR, woodworking tools, soldering station, vinyl cutter, airbrushes, etc...)
* Basic knowledge of CAD software
* Ability to vision, design, and teach workshops with themes related to innovation, design-thinking, problem-solving, teamwork
* Ability to teach new users about tools, help users develop their projects
* Prior experience in an educational setting, working with students and faculty
* Adaptability in a fast-paced environment
* Ability to work with people of varying skill levels
* Attention to detail
* Strong organizational capabilities
* Evidence of demonstrated commitment and contributions to Inclusive Excellence
* Commitment to the values espoused by JMU X-Labs

Additional Posting Information:

Terms of Service: $25/hour, 20 hours per week during the academic calendar (two 16-week semesters), possible opportunity for summer hours. Not to exceed 1000 hours per year.

Conditions of Employment:

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.

This is a part-time wage position working up to an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a calendar year with no benefits.
