Henderson Companies is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to join their team in Lenexa, KS. The Chief Financial Officer directs and oversees the financial activities of the corporation, including maintenance of financial systems, accounting tasks, FP&A, audit and tax compliance, firm valuation, reporting to the board, and strategic financial insight to the CEO and leadership team, all while maintaining strong bank and vendor relationships.

Minimum Qualifications for the Role are:



  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration. Commensurate experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Fifteen years of progressively responsible financial leadership roles
  • Ten years of professional leadership experience
  • Five years in the A/E/C industry
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required; ability to build financial models and perform data analysis.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding and application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Honest and trustworthy with a deep commitment to integrity.
  • Futuristic and forward-thinking mindset; ability to communicate and inspire people.
  • Willingness to give and receive difficult feedback and display confidence and courage in addressing difficult or complex issues.
  • Strives for achievement; is tenacious, resilient and takes initiative.
  • Possesses high emotional intelligence and builds effective relationships with others, encompassing communication, empathy, active listening, situational awareness, influence, and negotiation.
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills with the ability to lead, develop and inspire team members.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Must be confident, approachable, adaptable and open to innovative ideas.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
  • ESOP experience strongly preferred, including familiarity with plan design, compliance, and financial implications of employee ownership structures.


Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities

Financial Strategy



  • Conducts analyses of long-range economic trends both nationally and in the AEC Industry and anticipates their impact on the firm's projections.
  • Evaluates and manages the organization's liabilities and assets and provides continuous information around our cash position.
  • Works with the leadership team to understand strategic priorities and investment opportunities and provides clear financial modeling to prioritize options based on ROI utilizing cash or debt instruments.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders, including vendors, clients, banks, industry peers and consultants.
  • Works with the Chief Executive Officer and compensation committee to analyzes strategy and efficiency of ESOP to maintain sustainable growth and strong performance for employee owners.


Business Operations



  • Leads accounting and finance teams, overseeing budgeting, valuation, audit preparation and tax compliance activities.
  • Monitors and ensures cash flow remains sufficient and sustainable to meet operational and strategic needs.
  • Directs the preparation of all financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, BOD and shareholder reports, tax filings, and regulatory submissions.
  • Develops and tracks financial key performance indicators, benchmarking results against industry standards.
  • Analyzes variances between actual and forecasted financial outcomes, implementing adjustments to projections and budgets as needed.
  • Continuously reviews and enhances financial planning processes to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Partners with business leaders to oversee financial performance at the business line level and provides actionable recommendations for improvement.


Executive Leadership



  • Ensures the overall financial health of the company through collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Develops and communicates financial strategy and outcomes in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Acts as Treasurer for Henderson Engineers and Henderson Building Solutions managing financial operations and resources.
  • Actively participates in executive and board level committees, including the executive committee, ESOP committee, ESOP client advisory and compensation committee.
  • Partners with Chief Operations Officer to assess organizational structure, identifying opportunities for reorganization, downsizing or efficiency improvements as needed.
  • Communicates the financial vision, budget, results, and ESOP drivers to the firm.
  • Assumes accountability for training, development, and mentoring of talent; identifies opportunities and gaps in employee development efforts and responds with appropriate action.
  • Demonstrates an organization-wide mindset, cooperating across sector leadership teams to collectively meet company goals.
