Job Description: Lipscomb University is searching for a Network Engineer to join the University's IT team and help support the secure delivery of network services to the Lipscomb community. This individual must be a self-starter who has experience solving complex technical problems that require familiarity with a variety of technologies. Day-to-day work for this role includes administration of network hardware and software systems (firewalls, L3 switching, edge switching, wireless controllers, DHCP servers, DNS servers, etc.), performing troubleshooting for network-related issues (based on both proactive and reactive alerting), assisting with network vendor management, and relying on prior experience to provide guidance on active projects and future planning. A demonstrated history of collaborating with teams of various technical levels and strong communication skills are important to success in this role as this individual will regularly work with IT team members and other departments to design and implement technical solutions. Ongoing awareness and application of network security best practices is crucial as this individual must help maintain a resilient network environment that helps safeguard system and end-user data. This individual will play a pivotal role in supporting the University's mission by helping provide dependable and safe network connectivity for the entire Lipscomb community. Job Responsibilities:
- Management of physical wired and wireless campus network infrastructure for both the main campus and satellite locations
- Leading troubleshooting process of network-related technical issues for both wired and wireless network connectivity
Management of firewall security policies and advanced security features (URL filtering, vulnerability protection, etc.)
Close collaboration with the IT Cyber Security team on continuous improvement of network security and providing timely mitigation of vulnerabilities
Working with end users (students, campus guests, campus vendors, etc.) to help resolve escalated issues that may be network related
Working with IT team members and departmental customers (faculty and staff) to help guide technical troubleshooting and project planning as it relates to network connectivity
Working closely with hardware and service vendors during project implementations and technical troubleshooting related to network connectivity
Maintaining accurate documentation of network architecture and network changes
Maintaining timely documentation of problem resolutions via IT service management (ITSM) system
Assisting with scheduling and patching for network hardware and software
Participating in on-call rotation scheduling and responding to high priority alerts outside of office hours
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in an IT role
3+ years of experience in a networking-focused IT role
Strong problem solving skill set with demonstrated knowledge of how to break down a problem into smaller parts to help solve issues
Effective communication skills, including the ability to regularly and adequately convey technical concepts to non-technical customers
Customer-facing technical support experience that included a focus on interacting with customers from a place of patience and understanding
Hands-on experience administering industry-standard network hardware and software, including: firewalls, network switches, wireless controllers, DHCP servers, DNS servers
Working knowledge of core networking protocols (TCP/UDP, NAT, DHCP, DNS, SNMP, etc.) and IPv4 addressing
Experience managing a network access control (NAC) solution and associated 802.1X authentication for wired and wireless network clients
Experience with VPN technologies, including IPsec and SSL VPN client software
Experience with physical network infrastructure design and implementation, including: knowledge of structured network cabling installation (both copper and fiber), cable management, racking and cabling of network hardware, etc.
Familiarity with wireless networking architecture (wireless generation differences, wireless channels, BSSIDs, AP placement best practices, etc.)
Familiarity with performing packet captures when required for troubleshooting wired network connection issues
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds to shoulder height without assistance
Ability to climb to the highest permitted step of an 8 foot tall step ladder without assistance
Bonus Qualifications:
Bachelor's or associate's degree in IT-related field
Network and/or security-related IT certification (CCNA, Network+, Security+, vendor-specific certification, etc.)
Cyber security-focused work experience
Windows and/or Linux server administration experience
Virtual server environment administration experience (VMware, Nutanix, etc.)
Experience with VoIP traffic management, including management of QoS traffic shaping
Experience with routing protocol management (BGP, OSPF)
Cloud networking implementation experience (Azure, AWS, etc.)
Experience with managing IPv6 networks
Project management experience
