The Dietetic Technician - Registered collaborates with the dietitians and members of the culinary and nutritional team to provide clinical and nutritional care to our patients. Nutrition care plans are monitored and revised as necessary through an interdisciplinary process.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Schedule: 40 hours a week, 8:00am-4:30pm

Location: Monday-Wednesday at Oconomowoc and Thursday-Friday at West Allis

Maintains nutritional software database.

  • Monitors, verifies, and enters all information related to diet plans, menus, individual meal plans, allergy menu, and recipes in the nutritional software database.
  • Performs routine nutrition assessments on assigned patients under the guidance of the registered dietitian.
  • Evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcome of nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy interventions and answers or refers questions regarding patients' nutritional care to the registered dietitian.
  • Monitors the quality and accuracy of food served to patients.
  • Communicates with related departments, such as medical and nursing, to optimize nutrition care and monitoring of food quality and delivery.

Interact with Dietary Service's kitchen staff.

  • Coordinate involvement with modified diets with the manager and/or supervisor of Dietary Services.
  • Clearly informs kitchen staff of patient needs in a timely manner, i.e., special diets, snacks, food allergies, food dislikes, and any other information vital to patient needs. Include patient picture in the allergy book for kitchen staff.
  • Assist the manager and/or supervisor of Dietary Services in writing menus, to include seasonal menus, special menus, monthly theme meals, exchanges, and diet extensions.
  • Address patient complaints and concerns regarding meal findings to the manager and/or supervisor of Dietary Services.
  • Inservice department annually on modified diets and other mandatory topics.
  • Provide any pertinent information on the dry erase board in the kitchen, if applicable.

  • Display an ongoing professional image through attire, grooming, timeliness, and overall presentation.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills that promote a timely response to all inquiries and project completion.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Remain loyal to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics code of ethics.
  • Attend outside seminars to promote professional growth.

Participate in the Performance Improvement (PI) program.

  • Develop an understanding of the PI process.
  • Apply the PI model to department functions.
  • Identify PI concerns through the Hospital.
  • Aid in the development and participate in PI monitoring.

Demonstrate an understanding and adhere to Joint Commission and other regulatory agency compliance guidelines.

  • Involve self in the learning and application of standards relevant to the Dietary Services department.
  • Attend informational meetings to increase awareness of regulations.
  • Comply with the safety, infection control, and employee health programs.
  • Familiarize yourself with all pertinent policies and procedures. Conform to all hospital, Dietary Services, and Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Attend all mandatory in-services and other in-services relevant to the position.
  • Complete all required orientation competencies and training with the Dietary Services department, lead dietitian and hospital.
  • Attend pertinent department and program staff meetings, as required.
  • Participate in the family program and other designated programs as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Promote nutritional awareness throughout the community, when applicable.
  • Communicate nutritional concerns with kitchen staff as needed.
  • Support changes in staffing/scheduling when unit and hospital patient care needs require.
  • Provide the lead dietitian with a step-by-step plan during low census time.
  • Accept re-assignment in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrate willingness to adjust work schedule when able, to meet patient needs and to ensure the best customer service.

Additional Job Description:

Education/Training Requirements:

  • Associates degree in Dietetics.
  • Achieved and maintained registration through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and successfully passed the registration exam.
  • One (1) year experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Awareness and understanding of Joint Commission and other regulatory agency compliance regulations.
