Role Description:

ASTM International's Exo Technology Center of Excellence (ET CoE) vision is for people of all ages able to pursue a high-quality of life and fully participate in work and society thanks to safe, reliable, and effective exoskeletons. Our mission is to accelerate exo technology research, standards, testing, certification, and training.

We are seeking an Intern to support the ET CoE's research-to-standards and workforce development activities. This position is structured as an opportunity for the intern to grow and learn. The intern will work with ASTM management, stakeholders, and the ET CoE team in current and future projects relating to exo technologies. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone planning a career in emerging technologies.

The intern will be responsible for supporting the 2024 Exo Games, reviewing scientific literature, coordinating meetings and events, and assisting in developing workforce development products. Based on the current and anticipated quantity of this work, an intern would be required to work up to 35 hours per week.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop awareness of standards and the standards development process especially those involving the exoskeleton (F48) and robotics (F45) committees
  • Develop knowledge of ASTM International and our programs and products
  • Gain experience communicating with exoskeleton community professionals from around the world
  • Develop project management skills for research-to-standards projects
  • Develop event coordination skills for in-person and online events

General Responsibilities:

  • Basic Orientation - Learn about ASTM International and our standards programs and offerings, the purpose of these programs, and become familiar with the existing products. Learn about communication of technical knowledge to a wide variety of audiences through audio, visual, and multimedia productions.
  • Technical Orientation - Gain a basic understanding of the impact of exoskeleton technologies on industry, construction, medical, and defense communities.
  • Support the planning and coordination of the Exo Games being held at ASTM headquarters in August 2024. The Exo Games is a competition open to university teams of S.T.E.M degree students, designed to connect them with exo industry professionals, help them build lifelong relationships, and get hands-on experience with new exo standards.
  • Support the update of the online ET CoE bibliography which contains publications on exoskeleton research, development, and testing.
  • Support the update of the ET CoE exoskeleton device reporting form that allows anyone to submit safety related feedback on exoskeleton products to support future standards development not the reporting of specific incidents or to mitigate risk of any particular incident.
  • Support STEM activities in partnership with the exoskeleton student chapter at UCLan.

Education:

Must be enrolled in a related Bachelor of Graduate Degree Program

  • Ability to engage in a virtual working environment with a geographically dispersed team
  • Ability to bring together disparate technical information to communicate to a wide audience
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel) LinkedIn (i.e., professional social media platforms), and basic audio/video tools. Experience with Teams, Zoom, LinkedIn, and WebEx are considered a plus
  • Detail-oriented with good organizational skills
  • Flexibility, self-motivation and the ability to give and receive feedback at all levels are required
  • Enjoys analytical thinking and problem-solving

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent and close visual work at desk or computer.
  • Frequent sitting and working at desk.
  • Frequent verbal and written communication with team and other stakeholders by phone or video conferencing.

Time Requirements & Compensation:

  • Remote / Hybrid
    • 35 hours per week, May/June through August.
    • Compensation: $18.00/Hour
