Job description

Summary Description: Responsibility for the safe, reliable and cost-effective operation of the Recovery and Utilities department. This includes shared responsibilities with another coordinator for black liquor recovery boiler, wood fuel boiler, package boiler, two steam turbines, all water treatment, waste treatment, and compressed air. As area manager also includes accountability for the operating crews and their performance, safety, and training. Crew team leaders report to area manager. Manages in a manner that is consistent with the Billerud and Quinnesec policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Key Accountabilities:

  • Safety & Environmental - Provide leadership and resources to ensure employee safety and compliance with environment regulations. Lead by example through actions. Provide framework for and set expectations around crew/team led safety plans.
  • Sustainability - Understand, support, and make operating decisions to attain Billerud's sustainability goals with a focus on carbon footprint. Understand the goal vs. the cost and balance cost and carbon to find the most efficient way to meet these goals.
  • Quality - Provide leadership and resources to ensure product quality. Work with customers, area coordinators and resource groups to develop plans to centerline and reduce variability of operation.
  • Cost - Manage department to continuously evaluate costs and find ways to reduce costs without sacrificing safety, the environment, or reliability. Play a key role in budgeting and capital planning.
  • Reliability - Provide leadership and resources to improve equipment reliability through use of systems including Operator Driven Rounds, Maintenance Planning, Precision Maintenance, and Root Cause Failure Analysis. Lead resolution of chronic issues.
  • Engagement - Lead the building of effective work teams. This includes increasing skill level of employees, developing an organization that rapidly accepts and implements change, providing tools and techniques to help teams solve problems, and developing current/future leaders. Demonstrates ability to hold people accountable for performance.

Required Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years R&U experience or 10 years Recovery and Utilities experience.
  • Possess strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of people including regulators, engineers, consultants, contractors, managers, and the public.
  • Two years managerial or supervisory experience.

Minimum Required Skills:

  • Strong communications, interpersonal and organizational skills as well as demonstrated abilities to champion change and influence others at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to give encouragement, guidance, and direction to improve safety performance.
  • Self-starter able to work effectively with minimal direct supervision.
  • Maintain knowledge of corporate, state, and federal safety rules and regulations.
  • Physical stamina and agility to conduct on-site inspections of the facility and equipment.

Preferred Skills:

  • 10+ years' utilities/maintenance experience, preferably in pulp and paper making, power, or general industry.
  • Experience working with and optimizing recovery boiler and evaporators.
  • Knowledge in energy calculations, managing energy costs, and energy optimization.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and self-motivated.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and motivate teams, drive change, and interact cross-functionally.
  • Experience conducting training.
  • Willingness to obtain applicable licenses and certifications.
  • Experience with understanding and implementing regulatory requirements.
  • A commitment to safety and environmental stewardship as demonstrated by performance, action, and involvement.
