Visiting Assistant Professor of French

The Department of French and Italian at the University of Pittsburgh (www.frit.pitt.edu) invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of French with a specialization in Medieval or Renaissance Studies and one (or more) of our department's four curricular and research networks: environment; film & media; gender & sexuality; nation/translation (https://www.frenchanditalian.pitt.edu/research/research-networks). The teaching load is four courses per year at the undergraduate and graduate level. Pending budgetary approval, the position will begin on August 15, 2025, and end on May 15, 2026, and is outside the tenure track, with a one-year contract.

Applicants must have an active research profile, demonstrated interest and proven proficiency in teaching, C1-level proficiency in French and English (we welcome a variety of Frenches spoken around the globe), experience teaching French in a college or university setting, the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in curricular and experiential contexts, and PhD in hand at the time of appointment. PhD may be in any field.

The Department of French and Italian at the University of Pittsburgh is a vibrant community of students and scholars hosting a French major and minor, a PhD in French, and a PhD in Film and Media Studies with a Concentration in French offered in conjunction with the Film and Media Studies Program. Italian and French faculty collaborate on research, curriculum, and programming initiatives across the two programs. Beyond the department, Pitt offers a rich environment for engagement with the many interdisciplinary programs and centers that inform our work, such as Critical European Culture Studies; Cultural Studies; Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies; Jewish Studies; Medieval and Renaissance Studies; the European Studies Center; Film and Media Studies; the Global Studies Center; the Center for African Studies; as well as a robust Humanities Center, an Early Modern Worlds group, a World History Center, and various Digital Humanities initiatives.
