Overview

The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a part time Metrology Laboratory Technician position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.

What the EPA project is about

The Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER) is a scientific organization responsible for carrying out EPA's mission to protect human health and the environment by conducting applied, customer-driven research to improve decision making by EPA, federal, state, tribal and local agencies, when faced with challenging environmental problems in the built environment.



Responsibilities

As a team member, you will assist the metrology laboratory manager with pipette, balance, and weight set calibrations as well as with preparing calibration reports and documentation for the customer after calibrations are complete.

Scientific and Technical Support responsibilities will include:

    Performing annual calibrations and other calibrations as needed for customer pipettes, balances,
  • and weight sets;
  • Preparing metrology lab instrumentation and taking control charting readings prior to use each day;
  • Providing general maintenance for pipettes not meeting calibration standards including disassembly, cleaning, adjustments;
  • Evaluating leveling, and performing adjustments on lab balances not meeting calibration standards;
  • Communicating with research lab staff to provide updates on the status of their calibration orders; and
  • Reviewing and revising metrology standard operating procedures and policies.

Database and Records Management responsibilities (for both administrative and scientific and technical support) will include:

  • Maintaining an electronic lab notebook records of all calibrations performed;
  • Preparing calibration reports, Request for Calibration (RFC), and cover pages for QA review; and
  • Compiling documents for Calibration Certificate Packages for the research lab staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

  • One (1) year of college education in a physical science such as biology, molecular biology, toxicology, chemistry, engineering, or a closely related field of study;
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word;
  • Experience in administration support functions (i.e., recordkeeping, filing) and managing electronic and hardcopy records and/or databases;
  • Strong communication skills (i.e., written, oral, telephone etiquette, presentation abilities), including effective multi-media technical communications; and
  • Strong organizational skills, including demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments with competing deadlines.
  • If still enrolled in school a transcript will be required each semester to show applicant in good standing with university.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, SharePoint, OneNote, and desktop publishing applications such as Visio.


Location:
This job will be located EPA's facility in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $18.42 for hours worked.

Hours: Part-time - up to 24 hours per week.

Travel: Occasional local travel to other EPA laboratory facilities may be necessary. No overnight travel is not anticipated.

Expected start date: The position is part time and expected to begin January 2025. The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA.

Qualifications

  • Be at least 18 years of age and
  • Have earned at least a One (1) year of college education in a physical science such as biology, molecular biology, toxicology, chemistry, engineering, or a closely related field of study from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.

EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.
