Description

Flatiron Books is seeking a motivated individual for the full-time position of Junior Designer. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the cover design process and publishing as a whole. This person would work with the art department to coordinate with freelancers and vendors, organize meetings, help with art research, and design and route mechanicals. Candidates should possess strong communication and organizational skills and attention to detail.

What you'll do:



  • Act as a liason between art department and other departments - fulfilling art requests from Marketing/Publicity, Subrights, Audio, Ebooks, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a database of freelance contacts with up-to-date information.
  • Communicate with vendors regarding agreements and invoice submissions and troubleshoot issues with vendor paperwork and invoices/ payments
  • Check files from freelancers to confirm dimensions and specs
  • Create jpgs of covers, upload final covers to internal systems
  • Update designs and copy on backlist titles
  • Attend weekly production and jacket meetings and send out meeting agendas and minutes for bi-weekly meetings
  • Help with photo/art research
  • Set-up mechanicals for jackets and covers (take from first pass stage through pre-flight and final preparation of files for production)
  • Secure rights for imagery and fonts
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Art Director


What you'll bring:



  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously and maintain high level of quality, while working in a fast paced environment
  • Be comfortable with both administrative duties as well as more creative design related tasks
  • A strong background in the fundamentals of graphic design
  • A thorough understanding and appreciation of typographic principles
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently


Ideal Experience:



  • 1-2 years of design in publishing
  • A degree in graphic design or related field preferred but not required


This role will have an annual salary of $49,000 - $54,000.
