Description

The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications. Those with 8 years or more of required experience can expect offers up to the midpoint of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidates can consider their growth potential.

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering Network Security, the Systems Engineer 2-OT designs, installs, maintains, and monitors virtual and physical servers, storage area networks, cloud environment, and software of a complex nature for Metra's OT Engineering infrastructure. The position also manages and monitors the cybersecurity of all installed OT Engineering systems, infrastructure, servers, desktops, laptops, and other endpoints; coordinates and executes cybersecurity plans and procedures within the OT Engineering environment; and leads projects as assigned.

The primary duties include: unction as the lead desktop and server engineer for all OT Engineering Networks supporting communications and operations and ensuring successful and secure communications within Metra, and with other Chicago area railroads.

Manage and monitor all OT infrastructure and systems installations, including configuration, testing, and maintenance; implement and maintain strategies for backup, security, and redundancy; identify potential issues and implement solutions proactively; and test software routinely for bugs, redundancies, and security issues.

Manage OT Cybersecurity Program elements ensuring hardware, software, and related tools are configured and set up; assigning tasks and issues to team members and system owners confirming they are performed according to work plan; and resolving findings of vulnerability scans.

Monitor and report cybersecurity incidents including unauthorized access, discovery of malicious software, denial of service, and incidents that result in disruption to systems or facilities, or that have the potential to impact national economic security, public health and safety, or core government functions.

Install, configure, test, and maintain operating systems, application software, hardware, and system management tools; and clearly document design, maintenance, and support procedures.

Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.

This position is issued test equipment and a vehicle.

Requirements

1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.

2. In addition to #1, must have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible IT experience that includes one or more of the following: managing Microsoft network engineering (hardware and software); deploying current releases of Microsoft server software (application, database, email servers, etc.); monitoring, configuring, and/or deploying VMware virtualization technology; monitoring and maintaining backup and recovery systems; or monitoring and managing large scale Storage Area Networks.

3. Considerable knowledge of:

  • Windows OS, Windows Server, Linux, Powershell, Java, Python, SQL Server, DNS, and Active Directory.
  • IT desktop, laptop, server, and datacenter infrastructure, including virtualized environments, VMware, hypervisors, SAN, AWS, Azure, and cloud.
  • security architecture, configurations, and infrastructure; and SEIM, syslog, change management, and patch management.
  • IT management tools including SolarWinds, Wireshark, and TCP dump, and packet filtering techniques.

4. Strong:

  • analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • verbal and written communication skills.
  • interpersonal skills when interacting with users, management, and IT professionals.

5. Project management skills.

6. Proficient in:

  • operating systems like Windows Server and Linux, and programming languages such as PowerShell and Java.
  • Microsoft Office 365.

7. Ability to:

  • assess complex security issues and develop and implement solutions.
  • lift and move up to 30 pounds.

8. Demonstrated ability implementing, managing, and maintaining IT server infrastructure, IT endpoints (i.e. desktops, laptops, tablets, mobile phones), virtualization, business continuity and disaster recovery.

9. Must:

  • possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
  • be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.
  • be available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.

Preferred:

  • COMPTIA+, or similar equivalence.
  • Microsoft MCSE or Certified Professional (MCP).
