Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the UC College of Medicine has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients.

A full time Senior Research Assistant staff position is available in the Genomics, Epigenomics and Sequencing (GES Core) (Director: Prof. Xiang Zhang) at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The GES Core is one of the best equipped laboratories in the College using the most advanced technologies for next generation sequencing, single cell sequencing, and many other services/collaborations in genetics and epigenetics. This high volume, high impact laboratory is expected to generate over 1.2 million dollars in revenue this year while supporting research to understand a full spectrum of biological processes and human diseases. Staff in the Core are paid above the average salary, have opportunities to learn innovative technologies, operate the latest instruments for biomedical research, and attend national professional meetings.

This position will assist with the coordination of laboratory projects or research studies in the GES Core and make independent contributions to projects and studies.

Essential Functions

Independently perform experiments and records data:



  • Isolate DNA and RNA.
  • DNA and RNA QC analysis.
  • The next generation sequencing and related experiments.
  • General NGS data analysis (no coding required).
  • Single cell sequencing and related experiments.
  • PCR, real-time qPCR and data analysis.
  • Assist to develop new techniques and services.
  • Interpret data and assist in judging validity of data.


Routine core facility work:



  • Detail oriented, excellent record keeping abilities and organizational skills.
  • Process billing and ordering, and answer phones.
  • Communicate with Core users.
  • Perform other experiments as deemed necessary.
  • Perform related duties based on the Core's need.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry, or related fields.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

  • Three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Biomedical bench work experience either during work or study.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Master's Degree in biology, chemistry, or related fields.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Initiative, good technical skills, productivity and personal organization, and work in a customer-focused environment.
  • Maintain well-organized experiment records and always keep the core facility clean and clear.
  • Recent graduates are welcome to apply as extensive training will be provided.
