Position Highlights |
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is seeking an Academic Advisor who will play a pivotal role in student success and development in the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) undergraduate program. This position encompasses a broad spectrum of responsibilities including academic advising and registration assistance, data analysis, ABET accreditation, program assessment, and support of the undergraduate program in CSE. The academic advisor will guide students through successfully completing their degree program and career development. The incumbent will assist with course planning and departmental events. The Computer Science and Engineering Academic Advisor serves as the front-line contact for undergraduate students for developmental academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals and plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention. The incumbent builds formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs or majors. Duties & Responsibilities |
Advising:
- Assist students in evaluating academic abilities, setting goals and
objectives, meeting requirements of a specific program major, and exploring experiential learning and career opportunities. - Assist with assessing
individual students' stage of development (academic and career) and help to promote their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks. - Provide
guidance to students seeking to change their major, entering and exiting specific disciplines. - Offer advising to students on academic warning, probation, or with
eligibility concerns. - Monitor
students' academic progress, determine satisfactory progress toward degree, and assist students in completion. - Assist
students with mid-semester course modifications, ensuring they are aware of academic implications. - Communicate with students and faculty via email, phone, and in-person to
address academic issues, assess student progress, advise on life-work balance, financial matters, and mental health, and participate in student-centered events. - Assist
senior academic advisors and faculty with recommendations on petitions and amendments to student's program of study, monitor academic progress, maintain student files and records, and evaluate transfer transcripts for equivalencies.
Administration:
- Assist with maintaining undergraduate student
advisement reports across various campuses for Computer Science and Engineering students. - Assist
with and make adjustments to final degree check. - Assist with analyzing,
updating, and maintaining database of students. - Work with senior advisor to provide statistical data and reports to the Computer Science and Engineering faculty and the ECE Department Head.
- Monitor
student files and initiate advanced standing for students.
Collaboration & Meetings:
- Support a variety of programs
aimed at student recruitment, retention, major selection, student involvement, and general community building activities with students. - Maintain
ABET materials, assessment materials, and alumni lists. - Prepare advising and marketing materials, develop and facilitate
presentations using various multimedia, coordinate large and small informational sessions, and evaluate programs. - May assist with
CSE undergraduate courses each semester and oversee new undergraduate course additions/modifications through the UA course management system. - Provide support programming responsibilities for existing or new
initiatives which require the ability to plan, develop, market, and evaluate programs while working collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty. - Assist
with summer orientation for freshman and transfer students. - Additional duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word,
Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). - Ability to problem solve and make
decisions. - Demonstrated effective verbal and written
communication, excellent grammar, composition, and proofreading. - Ability to work in a team-based environment.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to
multi-task, meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities. - Ability to communicate with a diverse student
and faculty population.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's
degree required.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Previous experience serving undergraduate students in academic advising or other student-related services at the UA or similar higher education institutions.
- Experience with UAccess and UA advisor tools.
- Experience with University policies and procedures related to academic progression, and with general education requirements.
- Experience coordinating special programs related to career placement, internships, and college honor programs.
