Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

UnityPoint Health - Fort Dodge

FTE: .8 (Full Time, 36 hours per week)

*$10,000 SIGN-ON BONUS*

Work as part of a collaborate team with physicians, other nurses and healthcare professionals to provide care, monitor health conditions, plan long-term care needs, administer medicine, use medical equipment, perform minor medical procedures, and advise patients and their families on illness, care and continued care after a hospital stay.

Ability to accurately identify emergency medical conditions and apply appropriate interventions to provide safe, efficient and quality patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses and monitors total physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs of patients of all ages.
  • With guidance from/collaboration with other health team members, develops and maintains with the patient/significant other, an individualized, professional approach to patient care reflective of changing needs/goals as determined by evaluating the patient/significant other response.
  • Provides nursing care in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Assesses and plans for discharge needs, evaluates patients and significant others educational needs and initiates and implements appropriate teaching or makes appropriate referrals.
  • Documents nursing care consistent with documentation guidelines.
  • Communicates with other members of the healthcare team in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
  • Participates in unit operations demonstrating professional behaviors to include supporting goals of Nursing unit and maintaining awareness of resource utilization.
  • Participates in non-direct patient care activities including educational activities, performance improvement activities, standards development and review, hospital/nursing committees and other related activities.
  • Demonstrates positive customer relation skills.
  • Participates in discharge phone calls and documents in record
  • Participates in assigned department performance improvement initiatives
  • Adheres to all department and hospital policies.

Triage Responsibilities (if assigned)

  • Assures patients are acknowledged upon arrival, and triaged expeditiously
  • Completes triage within 5-10 minutes including:
    • Chief Complaint
    • Vital Signs, to include weights on pediatric patients
    • Initiates ASAP ED Chart
  • Identifies the components of the rapid triage assessment of adults/adolescents/pediatrics
  • Accurately assigns the Emergency Severity Index (ESI)
  • Makes a triage category determination based on chief complaint and nursing judgment
  • Practices immediate bedding process when beds are available
  • Implements ED Triage protocols if indicated when immediate bedding is unavailable.
  • Responsible for patients in the waiting room. Rounds and reassesses ED patients per policy. Documents reassessment in ASAP. Appropriately notifies charge nurse of issues and requests support when needed
  • Reassess patients waiting and initiates/documents essential triage to include but not limited to:
    • Arrival Info
    • Work related
    • Allergies
    • Medications
    • Screening questions (e.g. sepsis, domestic violence, fall, advanced directives suicide)
    • OB/Gyn Status
    • Destination

Qualifications

Education:

Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing required. Refer to Voluntary BSN Agreement form if new hire.

Required to obtain 4 hours of annual stroke education.

Bachelors in Nursing preferred.

Experience:

ED or Critical Care experience preferred.

One year of acute care nursing experience acceptable.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current RN Licensure in state of Iowa or applicable compact state. Must be licensed in state of residence.

Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS), and Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC), refer to Job Description Addendum. Completion of hospital-approved Critical Care course within 18 months of employment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to delegate wisely, exercise good judgment, maintain positive interpersonal relationships, adapt to change, evaluate critically and think creatively. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required for specialized area of assignment. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care appropriate to patients of all ages. Must demonstrate effective communication skills.

Other:

Electronic and mechanical patient care equipment, office equipment, medications, including controlled substances and therapeutic gasses. Highly-technical monitoring equipment.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

Gloves, Hepa respirator, fluid resistant gowns, goggles, masks.
