Research Study Assistant (Community Media Project Assistant)

Job Summary:

The core focus of this position is to provide project coordination and support to an initiative to build capacity and partnerships to support community media coverage of health issues to improve health equity in diverse Chicagoland communities. The initiative will include building and supporting partnerships between community and patient leaders, community media journalists and news outlets, and Northwestern researchers; designing and facilitating trainings for these groups; and providing dedicated fiscal support for these groups.

This position will support the leadership team of this initiative comprised of representatives from Public Narrative (PN), a Chicago-based nonprofit that focuses on cultivating media literacy, uplifting community voices in media, and shifting narratives around public health, public safety, and public education, the Alliance for Research in Chicagoland Communities (ARCC), and Center for Community Health (CCH) at Northwestern University.

Position Logistics:

• This position is part-time (20 hours per week).
• Position is a Northwestern University staff position but will also work closely with Public Narrative leadership and partners.
• This position reports to Jen Brown, ARCC Director
• Location: Hybrid position that primarily works off-campus and remotely. Office location: 750 N Lake Shore Drive, Rubloff Building, 6th Floor.

Specific Responsibilities:

Technical

• Schedules study visits with participants.
• Conducts interviews.
• Collects survey data.
• Facilitates communication with key personnel & participants to maintain project study flow.

Administration

• Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting & entering data; &/or preparing basic charts & graphs.
• Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
• Completes portions of grant applications &/or documents associated with current local, state, & federal regulatory guidelines, requirements, laws & research protocols.

Finance

• May process reimbursements for travel expenses.
• Monitors & distribute petty cash.
• Processes invoices &/or purchase requisitions.

Supervision

• May train other research staff to interview/test participants.

Miscellaneous

• Performs other duties as assigned (may include limited evening or weekend hours.)

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

• Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as social or health science or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
• Must complete NU's IRB CITI training before interacting with any participants & must re-certify every 3 years.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

• Bachelors degree in Public Health, Social Services/Social Work, Journalism, Health Communications or related field or equivalent combination of education, training or experience from which comparable skills can be acquired
• Experience working with Chicago-based community media, community health organizations, and/or health research organizations
• Knowledge and familiarity of diverse Chicagoland communities including local priorities, health issues, policymaking.
• Experience communicating complex concepts accessibly and at different literacy levels.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $19.16 to $23.95 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
