JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are seeking a highly motivated, self-starting Research and Development Engineer to join our Agile Systems Engineering (ASE) Group of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. You will support complex system development leveraging the latest technologies in areas such as hypersonic weapons, unmanned systems, advanced manufacturing, and supply chain logistics including a focus on electrical, mechanical, aerospace engineering and computer science.

As an ASE R&D Engineer you will be expected to work closely with Senior Engineers and subject matter experts on tasks associated with:

  • Analysis of alternative solutions
  • Requirements development and linkages throughout system architecture
  • System interface architecture to include mechanical, electrical, and software requirements
  • Model based engineering activities including hardware-in-the-loop test set development, model development, and integration with test set frameworks
  • Evaluation of communications and data architecture
  • Detailed design and implementation of electrical circuits, software, and firmware
  • Modular test set definition and development, and other detailed electrical engineering design tasks associated
  • Model based systems engineering
  • Coordination with external collaborators

This job will be filled at multiple levels depending upon the successful candidate's education and experience.Minimally requires a Bachelor's Degree in and engineering or science discipline. A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science is preferred.

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists

Required skills/experience:

  • Understand basic engineering principles and be able to apply them to real-world problems
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills
  • Be comfortable working in a team environment

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Hands-on experience with design, simulation, and test.
  • Working with standard laboratory test equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, etc.
  • Code writing in several languages with emphasis on embedded coding
  • FPGA firmware development with VHDL and Matlab code generation
  • Familiarity with controls, simulation, and hardware-in the-loop test set development and operation
  • Model Based Systems Engineering training and experience
  • Familiarity with systems engineering fundamentals
  • Active SECRET Clearance

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$76,700.00 - $129,500.00
