Overview
The Department of Technology, Design, and Technical Education (TDTE) at Utah State University (USU) seeks candidates for a full-time, academic-year (9-month), non-tenure track term lecturer position in the Pharmacy Technician program. This position is located on the USU Eastern Campus in Price, Utah. The successful candidate will provide leadership and didactic instruction to students at USU Eastern and via distance technology to students located on the USU Blanding and USU Moab campuses and will mentor and direct the work of laboratory teaching assistants on those campuses. In an effort to expand the availability of program course offerings, the successful candidate for this position may be asked to teach afternoon, evening, and dual (concurrent) enrollment courses.

Review of applications will begin in December 2024, and application reviews and interviews will continue until the position is filled. This position reports to the associate department head for health professions programs.

The starting date for this position is January 1, 2025.

Responsibilities
With a primary role assignment of teaching (95%), the successful applicant for this position will develop, teach, and improve courses in the pharmacy technician certificate program. Instructional emphasis will be placed on providing excellent instruction and preparing students for industry certification and successful careers as pharmacy technicians. Specific courses within the work assignment include, but are not limited to, Introduction to Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Community Pharmacy Practice, and Institutional Pharmacy Practice. Additionally, the faculty member will supervise the pharmacy technician externship and prepare students for their national exam and state licensure. The faculty member will also be expected to provide leadership for the pharmacy technician program and to work collaboratively with other faculty members to enhance the success of USU's health professions programs and students. Instruction to concurrent students, adults, and the local workforce as applicable will be expected. The additional role assignment is service (5%), and the successful candidate will be expected to provide meaningful service to the program, department, campus, university, the profession, and the community.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Designing and delivering classroom and hands-on instruction focused on maximizing student potential in the pharmacy technology industry.
  • Delivering class and/or clinical instructions according to an approved curriculum using accepted and effective teaching methods.
  • Developing daily lesson plans.
  • Teaching both theoretical and practical learning experiences.
  • Directing, guiding and evaluating student performance in a laboratory setting.
  • Working closely with the Associate Department Head/Director of Health Professions in updating curriculum in keeping with ASHP core curriculum guidelines and USHE alignment.
  • Assisting the Associate Department Head/Director of Health Professions and Accreditation Assistant in the program reaccreditation process as necessary.
  • Coordinating and leading pharmacy technician program advisory committee (PAC) meetings.
  • Teaching afternoon and evening courses, concurrent enrollment courses, and community/workforce training courses as needed.
  • Teaching courses that provide workforce training and industry validated qualifications.
  • Managing, maintaining, and improving of the pharmacy technology facilities, laboratories, equipment, and supplies.
  • Recruiting students and providing career mentoring.
  • Actively participating in professional growth and development.
  • Serving on departmental, division, and university committees.
  • Collaborating as a contributing member of the health professions team.
  • Assume the position as Pharmacy Technician Program Director.
  • Fulfilling other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Current pharmacy technician license through the Utah Department of Commerce's Division of Professional Licensure (DOPL) without sanctions or disciplinary action.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of pharmacy technician experience in the pharmacy setting within the last five (5) years OR three (3) years teaching in the field of pharmacy technician programs.
  • Computer proficiency including knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Valid driver's license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work site(s).
  • Commitment to student success.
  • Willingness to work to improve instructional effectiveness and personal technical skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of an instructional team; individual needs are subordinate to team goals.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, and team-building skills.
  • Cultural sensitivity and an ability to build rapport with a culturally diverse workforce in a multicultural setting.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Associate, bachelor's or graduate degree in health sciences or a related health sciences field of study from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated training in educational methods, testing and evaluation with evidence strength in instructional methodology, delivery, and pedagogical techniques.
