Title: Furnace Operator Level 1 Status: Non-Exempt

(Hourly)

Plant and Department: Foundry

Reports to: Foundry Supervisor

Purpose: The purpose and main objective of the furnace operator level 1 position is to operate, monitor, trouble shoot and maintain in a safe, clean and appropriate manner; induction melting furnaces and associated equipment. To produce (established and experimental) alloys of consistently high quality that conforms to specific specifications.

Essential Functions:


  • Can troubleshoot all alloys and equipment.
  • Acts as a mentor to a lower-level furnace operator.
  • Using melting experience; operate, monitor and maintain furnaces and equipment to produce a quality product (established and or experimental) in a safe, clean and professional manner.
  • Prepares all paperwork pertaining to alloys produced. Manages time and meets production schedules and standards.
  • Ability to analyze and adjust to unanticipated work situations. Skill in reasoning and problem solving to determine the safest and most beneficial process. Ability to make improvements in or design new work methods and procedures.
  • Complete other work duties as assigned.
  • Will Cross Train in other positions/departments as assigned.



Non-essential Functions


  • Assists with special projects, attends meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Performs various types of duties assigned by the foundry foreperson/lead.
  • Helps to maintain professionalism between the furnace operators.



Minimum Qualifications:

Same or similar work environment

Education:

High School

Working Hours and Conditions, including Travel Required:

With forklift maneuver (to position for hoist pick up) charge cans with a weight of 300lbs. must be able to tilt ladles (while on hoist) weight 450lbs. to position for repairs. Must be able to cope with foundry heat.

Must be able to establish an effective working relationship with supervisors an fellow employees.

Must be able to work flexible work hours when needed, and overtime when requested.

Communicate to the foundry foreperson/lead when equipment needs repairs. Must conform to all safety policies, quality procedures, productivity and inventory reporting procedures.

Equipment used: Induction melting furnaces, dryers, roto canters, air classifiers, grinders, scales, hardness testers, hoist, hand tools and others as assigned.

Dusts and fumes contain: nickel, chrome, cobalt, copper, silicon and iron. Stress ranges from low to high depending on production requirements.
