Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications forPublic Safety Lieutenant.

Under the direction of the assistant director or director, will supervise activities of the Public Safety Department on one of three shifts; coordinate shift scheduling for regular, part-time, and student officers; and perform duties as assigned including performing all the duties of a public safety officer as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities



  • Supervise, coordinate, provide support, and participate in activities relating to security, parking, traffic, safety, and other actions as required.

  • Communicate information to staff on a regular basis that affects the security or parking function.

  • Coordinate and prepare shift scheduling for regular, part-time student officers, parking, and support staff to maintain continuous, round the clock coverage. Responsible for scheduling additional coverage during special events as needed.

  • Coordinate with the representative from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office the scheduling of off-duty deputies for special events, campus and housing patrol.

  • Review reports and assist with investigations of personal injury accidents, auto accidents, property loss and damage, disturbances, safety issues, and other violations occurring on University property.

  • Manage any evidence obtained during the course of an incident investigation.

  • Accountable for the efficiency, discipline, appearance, and general good conduct of security, support, and parking personnel under their supervision.

  • Evaluate, assist and instruct assigned subordinates in the proper performance of their duties by observing their activities and capabilities.

  • Develops or assists in the development of protocols and guidelines.

  • Understand, interpret, and keep informed of all applicable rules and regulations of the University, specifically the Student Code of Conduct. Explain said policies and regulations to subordinates, faculty, staff, and visitors as needed.

  • Report cases of misconduct; incompetence; neglect of duty; or violation of the rules, regulations, or established procedures of security, support, and parking personnel in writing to the Director or Assistant Director. Initiate immediate corrective actions, if and when needed.

  • Provide courteous customer service to students, employees, and guests of the University.

  • Assist in the preparation of Annual Performance Evaluations for Public Safety Officers.

  • Assist with developing, scheduling and coordinating the training of new Public Safety personnel and for the annual training.

  • Assist with developing, scheduling, presenting and coordinating annual training for other university departments and offices when requested.

  • Provide information at orientation fairs and other university events.

  • Assist with training of new deputies during their rotation at the university.

  • Liaison with external emergency response agencies, such as fire department, sheriff's office, and the Emergency Management Agency.

  • Other duties as assigned, including performing the duties of public safety officer, dispatcher, parking enforcement, or sergeant as needed.


Required Knowledge and Skills



  • Associate degree in Law Enforcement, Protective Services, or related field or an equivalent combination of four years education and/or work experience in campus security, law enforcement, military, or related field.

  • Previous supervisory experience demonstrating strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.

  • Must possess excellent listening and oral communication skills, effective even with unpleasant, angry or discourteous creating reports for internal and external individuals. Communications, both oral and written, must be fact-based and clear to others.

  • Must demonstrate keen observational skills and the ability to remember names, faces, and places. Experience in ascertaining facts through personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.

  • Demonstrated skill in quickly analyzing routine and complex situations and taking a reasonable course of action.

  • Experience with computer systems, word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, and Internet programs.

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.

  • Status is deemed "essential employee". Required to report to duty assignment 24/7.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and good driving record.

  • Must either have upon hire or successfully obtain within one year of employment concurrent with the needs of the department and based on classroom availability and thereafter maintain the following certifications:
    * Emergency Medical Response
    * Health care provider CPR, AED, Standard first Aid
    * Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) / First Responder
    * National Incident Management System (NIMS)
    * Complete Federal Emergency Management Agency (F.E.M.A.)
    * Stop the Bleed, CIT, and BSL4
    * Other certifications/ recertification or specializations as assigned or required.

  • Attend professional development courses and in-service training.

  • Complete Federal Emergency Management Agency (F.E.M.A.) and National Incident Management Systems (N.I.M.S.) courses as required by Public Safety

  • Must also meet all qualifications and functional requirements of the public safety officer and sergeant positions.


Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements


  • Standard days are Monday - Friday.
  • Standard hours are 8a-4p, but standard work schedule may be revised to meet special assignments
  • Overtime may be required.
