Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, the Build Lab Manager will work independently with students and faculty to support the design and fabrication of projects, prototypes, and objects using a range of materials, including wood, metal, plastic, and more. The Build Lab Manager oversees safe operations and management of both traditional and computer-aided equipment within the Build Lab environment.

Responsibilities
  • Trains faculty, staff, and students who use the Build Lab in the safe and proper operation of all tools and equipment and maintains careful observation of activities to ensure these processes are followed.

  • Performs regularly scheduled and periodic maintenance, upgrades, and repairs on Build Lab equipment as needed to ensure their correct and safe operation.

  • Ensures the Build Lab is always kept clean and safe.

  • Coordinates with supervisor for procurement of supplies and stock as needed.

  • Provides technical and teaching support to instructors and students in the completion of their course assignments and act as a valuable resource to the SOA's fabrication classes.

  • Coordinates the loan of hand tools and equipment to faculty, staff and students. Sends overdue notifications when necessary and advises SOA administration when academic bars and fees are needed to secure the replacement of tools and equipment.

  • Manages the University's card access control system for the Build Lab.

  • Manages the Student Technicians shifts for the Build Lab to ensure it is open and available to students on evenings and weekends.

Required Qualifications
  • Studies in design or fabrication-based curriculum, or an allied field (such as an artist practice, product design, carpentry etc.).

  • Experience in fabrication and the maintenance of analog and digital fabrication equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and train others the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively use tools, materials, and techniques common to wood, metals, and plastics.

  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance associated with common hand tools and stationary shop equipment used in wood, metalworking, and casting (plastic vacuum formers, kilns, etc.).

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's and/or Master's Degree in a related art/design field.

  • Academic or professional shop supervisory/management experience.

  • Experience teaching workshops or classes, preferably to college-aged students.

  • Experience working in a fabrication lab (woodworking, metalworking, prototyping).

  • Experience with digital equipment, for example, CNC routers, ShopBot routers, etc.

  • Knowledge of advance fabrication-related software, such as 3D CAD/CAM software (VCarve Pro), etc.

  • Experience researching materials and processes.

  • Demonstrated student service experience requiring diplomacy and professionalism.

  • Ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures and/or recommend and develop new policies and procedures.

Salary Range

$50,000 - $57,000 (fixed rate)

Working Conditions
  • This position works year-round, including summers.

  • Will work in a combined wood, metal and casting shop, and will be exposed to saws, cutting tools, sawdust, welding equipment, and loud noises.

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.

  • Service or occupational hazards may exist.

  • Must be able to lift and move typical metal and wood supplies, such as sheets of plywood, boards, steel tubes, and bars.

  • Must wear appropriate safety attire at all times.

  • Teaching, training and supervision activities will occasionally require talking and standing for long periods of time.

Work Shift

Monday-Friday, 9am - 6pm
