Job Description:

Provides genetic counseling assessment and services to patients and families. Collaborates with care team in providing patient care related to genetic counseling. Support and improve provision of care within the service. Serves as a mentor within the genetic counselor group. Leads multiple research projects and/or clinical programs related to the field of genetics, genetic testing and genetic counseling in partnership with physicians and healthcare professionals to support and advance the program.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Provide genetic counseling to patients and family.
    • Choose appropriate tests based on family history or diagnosis.
    • Discuss testing and management options including limitations of the test, specificity and sensitivity.
    • Discuss implications and genetic risks related to patient and family history.
    • Facilitate informed decision making related to testing and management.
    • Participate in specialty lab orders and informed consent process.
    • Advocate for the patient/family, promoting client- centered, informed, noncoercive and value-based decision making.
  • Provide genetic services for patients, families and other health care providers.
    • Review patient/family indications for referral for genetic counseling.
    • Construct relevant and comprehensive personal and family histories and pedigrees, including 3-4 generation pedigrees.
    • Obtain and review medical records and available genetic test results.
    • Ensure information is communicated to patients and families with consideration for education level, age, culture and population specific considerations.
    • Collaborate with physicians and other health care professionals as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
    • Critically assess genetic/genomic, medical and social science literature and information, and collaborate with colleagues to evaluate and implement potential care delivery changes.
  • Document findings.
    • Document in a timely manner according to department guidelines.
    • Document assessment findings, risks and relevant options for testing and any referral or recommendations.
    • Document discussions and decisions made by patient and family.
    • Document all correspondence.
    • Order lab tests through the electronic medical record, as relevant.
    • Document telephone encounters in the medical record.
  • Participate in department/service leadership.
    • Evaluate personal clinical quality and effectiveness.
    • Analyze organizational systems that have an impact on patient care and assist in care optimization.
    • Contribute to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others.
    • Participate in and coordinate educational activities that enhance professional performance.
    • Assist in the development and standardization of proactive protocols and processes.
    • Participate in medical and genetics research projects.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary improvement teams.
    • Collaborate with physician leadership to advance program development needs as identified.
    • Incorporate and share research findings into practice.
    • Participate in establishing and monitoring standards of practice in collaboration with other genetics experts.
  • Serve as mentor for colleagues in identifying ways to excel in specific fields of practice.
    • Provider oversight and guidance to less experienced colleagues to provide them with the support needed to take on more challenging genetic counseling cases.
    • Coordinate the rotation of Genetic Counseling students as they work with the program.
    • Provide supervision to Genetic Counseling students in partnership with key stakeholders to ensure a successful rotation and experience.
  • Lead identified department/service leadership projects or service line initiatives to advance genetic counseling services, standards and processes across the organization.
    • Serve as content expert on project teams and committees to support program efficiencies through outreach programs.
    • Provide leadership in department case discussions/conferences and serves as a key partner with external organizations to strengthen processes and communications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Genetic counseling program; various specific field of study titles

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 to 7 years experience required as Board Certified or Licensed Genetic Counselor, with at least 4 years highly preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certified Genetic Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counseling required
  • MN State Genetic Counselor License required
