The Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC), was initially established in 1984 and has been continuously funded for over 40 year. Its mission is to conduct research into the causes, treatment, and ultimately prevention of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. We are a hub for Alzheimer's and related dementia research. We provide training and resources such as data, biospecimens, and participant referrals to affiliated memory and aging researchers and community partners. We also offer educational activities and Quality of Life Programs for the broader the community. Our clinical research program invites community volunteers with and without memory loss to complete an annual clinical and cognitive exam and on some years, to also complete a blood draw, lumbar puncture, brain imaging, skin biopsy, and other biomarker protocols. Brain donation at the end of life makes it possible to understand how pathology in the brain might be detectable during life by association with the clinical and biomarker features that study participants volunteer to complete during their annual visits. The longitudinal study follows about 500 participants and their study partners at any given time and also supports many affiliated studies. Since its inception, over 3,000 volunteers have participated in this study. Some of our volunteers have been volunteering for 40 years and we are continuously enrolling new participants as others make the ultimate gift of brain donation.
