JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Berks Composition Program is seeking qualified part-time teachers for ENGL 202C: Technical Writing. ENGL202Cis an advanced writing course designed to help students in science and engineering develop the writing strategies that they will need to communicate successfully on the job and to help them understand why those strategies are appropriate and effective. A key emphasis will be on the rhetorical principles of effective communication, including context analysis and defining clear, actionable purposes. Students will gain experience with a wide range of technical writing genres, including reports, descriptions, definitions, procedures, job application documents, emails, memos, and web applications. Students will also learn about the importance of document and graphic design, including how best to design communications to maximize their potential for success.

Job Duties

We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who share our commitment to undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to our efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for students. The primary responsibilities of the Adjunct English Composition Instructor include:

  • Plan and teach one to three in-person course sections (three to nine credits) per semester.
  • Follow best practices for teaching English Composition (see WPA Resolutions and Statements, among others).
  • Work effectively with diverse populations and audiences.
  • Hold at least one office hour per three credits taught.
  • Grade student work (with limited assistance from artificial intelligence).
  • Submit student progress reports at least twice during the semester.
  • Respond to administration and student emails.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Effectively use the Penn State learning management system (Canvas).
Requirements and Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of all requirements for the M.A. in Rhetoric/Composition, English, or a closely related field with degree awarded by the start date of employment.
  • Experience teaching Technical or Business Writing.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate education in writing studies, rhetoric, and composition, as well as experience teaching students with a variety of needs and experiences.
  • Evidence of commitment to supporting diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D in Rhetoric/Composition or closely related field.
  • Experience teaching advanced writing and/or writing in the disciplines, particularly technical writing.
  • Experience teaching multimodal composition and integrating various educational technologies.
  • Interest and experience in community-based writing.
