Position Overview
The Associate General Counsel is responsible for providing legal support to the University of Kansas. The Associate General Counsel will report to the General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs for the University of Kansas. The Associate's primary duties will be on KU's main campus in Lawrence, Kansas, but may involve travel to other campuses from time to time. The Associate's primary responsibility is to represent the University of Kansas in legal matters arising from the operations of the University.

The Associate General Counsel will play an important role in advancing the University's academic and business objectives and in protecting the University's overall interests by promoting effective operations and policy, and a culture of ethics, integrity, and compliance. In a fast-paced environment, the Associate is a seasoned attorney, enthusiastic about taking a client-centered approach to business practices on behalf of Kansas' flagship university.

Job Description
60% - Direct client engagement, comprehensive legal services and advising on a wide variety of legal issues serving all departments and units of the University, in coordination with other attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel. The Associate General Counsel will engage in matters of employment and faculty rights, tenure, Title IX, student conduct matters, open records and open meetings, residency appeals, construction, real estate, finance, business transactions, intellectual property and university compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations. The Associate General Counsel will advise leadership, faculty and staff on a wide variety of matters arising from the operations of the University of Kansas and its controlled affiliates;

20% - Review and interpretation of policies relating to University operations, faculty and staff; sponsored research and related funding and compliance requirements; ownership and enforcement of copyrights, trademarks and patents; legal issues relating to the arts, online education, internet and social media, and library operations;

20% - Working with internal clients and outside counsel, traveling to other campus locations as required from time-to-time, and participating on committees, conferences with university clients and participation in professional development opportunities. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  1. J.D. from an accredited, American law school;
  2. Current license to practice law in Kansas (in good standing);
  3. Strong analytical writing, problem-solving, interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Previous experience requiring the ability and willingness to handle a wide variety of legal matters both independently and as part of a team as evidenced by application materials;
  5. Minimum of three (3) years active practice experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple, complex, time-sensitive assignments simultaneously with a high degree of organization and effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Good judgment and creative, practical problem-solving skills.
  • Collegiality and commitment to expeditious service to our clients
  • Experience with two or more areas of legal practice relevant to higher education, public service or corporate business.
