Job Summary:

The Department of Radiology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Medicine & Public Health is seeking a Scientist I to work in Dr. Diego Hernando's Quantitative Imaging Methods Lab (QIML) and Dr. Scott Reeder's Liver Imaging Research Program (LIRP) in the development, implementation, and validation of novel quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) methods in the body. The Scientist will program image and signal reconstruction models that represent the MR physics of tissues, optimize fitting and acquisition parameters, and implement the methods on commercial MR hardware. They will validate the precision and accuracy of novel quantitative MR methods through testing in phantoms and in people. They will work closely with radiologists and other clinicians to provide engineering solutions to clinical needs and challenges.

Scott Reeder, MD, PhD is the John H. Juhl Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology. The University of Wisconsin Liver Imaging Research Program (LIRP) is a multidisciplinary group of physicists, engineers, radiologists, surgeons, hematologists, endocrinologists, pathologists, and pediatricians interested in the advancement of human health through improved abdominal imaging technologies. The LIRP focuses on development and translation of new imaging methods, particularly MRI, for improved detection and quantification of diseases affecting the abdomen.

Diego Hernando, PhD, is an Associate Professor and PI of the Quantitative Imaging Methods Lab. This lab focuses on the development and translational validation of imaging techniques for rapid and quantitative MRI. By measuring physically meaningful properties of tissue, the group aims to develop quantitative imaging biomarkers to improve the detection, staging and treatment monitoring of various diseases.

The Scientist I position will work closely with multiple research groups and assist with mentorship of junior researchers.


Responsibilities:
Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.

  • 20% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 45% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • 10% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 5% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 10% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 5% Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
  • 5% Assists with the mentorship of trainees in the group.

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
PhD or equivalent in Engineering, Medical Physics, or a related technical degree by start date.


Qualifications:

Required:
Expertise in Magnetic Resonance (MR) physics and methods, particularly quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and fat/iron quantification is required.

Experience with construction of MRI phantoms that simulate liver tissue properties required.

Programming experience in Matlab, Python, and/or C++, including signal reconstruction based on appropriate physical models, fitting optimization, and/or Monte Carlo simulation is required.

Preferred:
Experience with deep learning or machine learning based methods is preferred.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team.


Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 80% - 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

The starting salary for the position is $70,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
