On the Renal Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital, the care team specializes in supporting adult and geriatric patients through some of life's toughest challenges. Patients arrive with a range of medical conditions such as complications from diabetes, pneumonia, cellulitis, and encephalopathy, while others are recovering from renal and urology surgeries like nephrectomies, prostatectomies, or TURP procedures. The team also manages patients with continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) and provides specialized care for those requiring peritoneal dialysis-handled by trained nurses from the unit, regardless of where the patient is in the hospital.

The Renal Unit houses 22 beds, offering a blend of advanced medical care and a personalized approach. Nurses on this unit work 12-hour shifts, with scheduling designed to fit their lives through self-scheduling. Schedules are built in 6-week increments, incorporating every third weekend and a holiday rotation, with weekend program options available for added flexibility.

New nurses are welcomed with a 6-week competency-based orientation led by experienced preceptors. Training includes specialized education in renal care and peritoneal dialysis, ensuring every nurse feels confident in managing the unique needs of these patients.

Day shifts maintain a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5, while nights are staffed at 1:5-6, providing a supportive environment where teamwork thrives. Whether you're a new graduate or an experienced nurse, the Renal Unit is a place where you can grow your skills and make a lasting impact on patients' lives.

As an Acute Care Technician in the Renal/Urology unit, you will play a pivotal role in providing care to patients facing kidney and urological conditions. Working in a fast-paced and specialized unit, you will support individuals undergoing treatments such as dialysis, post-surgical recovery, and managing chronic kidney and urinary tract conditions. Your dedication and attention to detail will directly impact the well-being and comfort of patients on their healing journey.

Your interactions with patients are crucial, you will provide not only physical care but also emotional support, building trusting relationships with patients and their families. Each day, you'll be a reassuring presence, offering assistance with the routine while staying alert to any chanes in a patient's condition.

You will provide assistance and/or performs basic activities of daily living and specified treatments and procedures under the direct supervision of the nurse. May perform non-direct patient care activities as assigned, requested, or directed including but not limited to stocking and clerical activities. Your contribution to the unit goes beyond patient care. You;ll help ensure a clean, safe, and organized environment, adhering to infection control protocols, and working seamlessly with your colleagues. Your work will be an integral part of the team's efforts to improve patient outcomes and provide high-quality patient-centered care.

Minimum Job Requirements:

* 2 years High School Education. Age 17 with work permit

* Basic Life Support (BLS)

* Reading and math ability appropriate to the position

* Available to work 3 days (12 hours shift) per week, every 3rd weekend and holiday.

Job Responsibilities:

* Performs and documents basic patient care tasks under the direct supervision of an RN. Maintains competency of tasks in which the PCA has been trained. Completes assigned tasks within required timeframe. Seeks clarification from the nurse when in doubt about how to proceed.

Maintains a safe environment. Reports safety hazards to appropriate personnel. Completes safety event report as necessary. Complies with Infection Control policies. Demonstrates knowledge of safety/emergency policies and procedures and appropriately corrects any identified hazards.

* Communicates effectively with others. Shows respect to patients, families and co-workers. Reports patient related information in a timely manner. Reports problems in completing assignment/tasks in a timely manner to the appropriate person. Documents observations and tasks performed. Works in collaboration with all members of the health care team. Utilizes chain of command appropriately.

* Performs supply, equipment, and environmental-related activities as required, and described in principal accountabilities. Recognizes, reports, and follows-up on issues with supply/equipment availability in a timely manner. Reports and follows through as per unit standard concerning equipment that is broken or malfunctioning. Assures equipment/supplies are readily available for use by next person.

* Acknowledges need for self growth and accountability. Identifies area for self improvement. Demonstrates/maintains knowledge of organizational and unit changes. Supports organizational and unit changes.
