Position Highlights |
The Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center (SWEHSC) at the University of Arizona is seeking an Program Manager for Community Engagement to support the director in the development, implementation, and management of the projects and programs of the Community Engagement Core (CEC). The Program Manager will work to enhance productivity of staff and student interns and ensure to complete projects and programs and maintain compliance with rules and regulations related to Minor Policy, IRB approvals, and MOAs with Tribal partners. The Program Manager must be well versed in performance management, program management, and competent in assuming delegated duties. The overall goal of this position is to assist the Director in continuing to attain the objectives and specific aims for National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences funding and other grants such as WEST Environmental Justice Center as well as satisfaction of the community partners who engage with and fund the work of the CEC. Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy. Duties & Responsibilities |
Effective work with community partners:
- Maintain relationships with community partners through meetings and email. (Community partners include tribal communities and government departments, schools and school districts, grassroots organizations, individual community partners as well as city, county, and state partners)
- Develop activities for research dissemination by understanding the research of the Center
- Develop activities and mechanisms to understand and document the environmental health concerns of the communities served
- Develop evaluation and assessment tools and report findings
- Display competence in community engagement principles
- Assist Director with developing and delivering trainings to students and staff on how to work with different communities
- Organize events, programs, and projects as requested by community partners
Environmental Health Programs:
- Collaborate with other staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of portfolio of environmental health programs including but not limited to:
- Partner with researchers and their students to develop educational materials about their research
- Organize science cafe events, community teach-ins, and environmental health activities for youth and the public
- Develop strategies to assist researchers in reporting back their results and communicating with the public
- Promote environmental health research through social media, newsletters editorials and publications
- Create reports and outreach materials on environmental health related to community-partner requests and concerns
Initiatives with WEST Environmental Justice Center
- Oversee Arizona outreach for the WEST EJ center to include identifying community events and meeting and coordinating outreach teams
- Co-Lead Capacity-Building team
- Lead development and execution of Community Champion cohorts, student internship program, and community resource fairs
Oversee summer youth:
- Coordinate and support staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of portfolio of summer programs
- Assure all youth programs are in compliance with the UA Policy for the Protection of Minors
- Secure funding and manage and execute budgets for each summer program
Other duties as assigned including:
- Assist Director in writing grants and help in the preparation for the submission of a grant under the direct supervision of the Director
- Participate in internal and community advisory boards
- Assist with translating materials and/or overseeing translation and co-development of bilingual or multi-lingual materials as appropriate
- Manage and oversee operational support staff to complete a portfolio of projects
- Assist with on-boarding and training new staff
- Meet with, supervise, advise, and provide support to staff to complete their projects and programs on time
- Participate in the recruitment efforts for student interns for each semester
- Partner with director to ensure proper staffing throughout the year
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to multitask and address multiple priorities at once
- Excellent communication skills and is able to effectively delegate tasks amongst team
- Ability to promote environmental health with youth, rural, Latine and Tribal communities
- Ability to apply UA policies on protection of minors and is able to apply that knowledge in all CEC youth programs
- Ability to apply the concepts of Tribal Sovereignty in developing and evaluating tribal programs

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Two years of experience managing community based programs
- Two years experience in a supervisory role
- Master's Degree in Environmental Health or other related field
- Experience working with and developing programs for youth
- Experience working with tribal communities
- Understanding of and experience with environmental health and justice
- Fluency in Spanish speaking and writing.
