Research Assoc/Sr Research Assoc (ACERT)-Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Cornell University (Ithaca, NY)

The ACERT (Advanced Electron-Spin Resonance Spectroscopy) unit in the Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department at Cornell University is seeking applicants for two Research Associates and one Sr. Research Associate level research position to perform structural biology research on proteins and protein complexes using advanced electron spin resonance spectroscopic techniques as well as organic synthesis of spin labels/biradicals. Rank and duties will commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Use and develop novel electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic applications in continuous wave (cw) ESR, double/multiple quantum coherence (DQC/MQC) ESR and double electron resonance (DEER).
  • Developed technology developed must be refined for applications to probing
  • Prepare ESR samples containing organic, inorganic, and protein molecules.
  • Collect electron spin resonance spectra for the research group and service requests from both national and international collaborators.
  • Work on protein mutation, extraction and purification.
  • Develop new algorithms and software for spectral analysis.
  • Synthesize novel spin probes for studying protein and other biomolecular structures.
  • Collaborate with other researchers both internally and externally.

Related Duties:

  • Provide advice and assistance when needed, primarily in data analysis and interpretation of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of biomolecules running in both continuous wave and pulsed mode.
  • Assist in teaching chemical synthesis techniques, conducting electron spin resonance experiments, and home-built data analysis software to new students and postdocs.
  • Train graduate students on lab equipment and various wet-lab techniques. In particular, the individual will be responsible for providing advice and assistance when needed, primarily in conducting and interpreting electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of biomolecules running in both continuous wave and pulsed mode.
  • Write grant proposals and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and engage in ongoing academic and intellectual life within relevant scientific programs in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
  • Software development for the spectrometers and maintaining the high field high frequency spectrometers.
  • Present research findings at conferences and to the broader community.
  • Utilize industrial experience to initiate and lead industrial collaborations.
  • Manage inventory, maintain and repair of lab equipment.
  • Supervise and hire undergraduates, graduates and postdoctoral researchers for ESR research projects.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemical physics, biophysics, applied physics, or related field.
  • Strong skills in organic synthesis and physical chemistry.
  • Experience in lab management; electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments and pulsed dipolar spectroscopy experiments; organic synthesis; data analysis; and computer programming (Python, Mathematica MatLab), and data analysis.
  • Research experience after PhD in academia and/or industrial research.
  • Strong writing and computer programming skills.

These are 12-month benefits eligible full-time (100%FTE) appointment term which is renewable depending on funding and performance.

Pay Ranges: $61,000 - $88,000

Actual salary offers in the College of Arts and Sciences will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills.
