Sr. Extension Associate/Exec Director, CUCE-NYC

Cornell University Cooperative Extension -New York City (CUCE-NYC) is an integral part of the statewide Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) system, providing programming throughout the five boroughs of NYC. CUCE-NYC engages over 30,000 New Yorkers each year through the federal Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), 4-H/Youth Development, Parenting Education, the Farmers Market Nutrition Outreach Program/NYC Farmers Market Alliance, the Weill Cornell Medicine Clinical and Translational Sciences Center Community Engagement in Research Core, school-based Hydroponics/Aquaponics/Aquaculture Learning Labs, and other initiatives. CUCE-NYC has program offices in the South Bronx and Jamaica, Queens, as well as offices in Cornell University's Manhattan co-location site.

CUCE-NYC works in close collaboration with other CCE programs, including Harvest NY, Urban Agriculture, Ag in the Classroom, and NY Sea Grant, and the Food and Nutrition Education in Communities (FNEC) program of Cornell's Division of Nutritional Sciences, and CHE-NYC, the suite of Cornell Human Ecology (CHE) programming led by CHE's Associate Dean-NYC. CUCE-NYC is a founding member of the National Urban Extension Leaders Network and its Northeast Regional Urban Extension Leadership Network.

The Executive Director of Cornell University Cooperative Extension-NYC Programs (CUCE-NYC), a Senior Extension Associate, is a non-tenured faculty member of Cornell University. The Executive Director provides leadership and administration oversight for CUCE-NYC and all NYC based programs in CCE. The Executive Director serves as a connector to CCE overall and to faculty in CALS and CHE. The Executive Director participates in overall program management through frequent interaction with extension faculty leads and program directors, especially on the integration of research and Extension components as well as on program development, evaluation, and priorities for reporting and communication. The Executive Director has significant autonomy in the administration of CUCE-NYC and is expected to do so in close communication with the Director of CCE and alignment with the mission of CCE and the extension programs of CALS and CHE.

The Executive Director convenes and directs the CUCE-NYC program leadership team, directly supervises CUCE-NYC's Administrative Manager and other key leadership personnel, serves as Principal Investigator/Account Manager on grants and other funding supporting CUCE-NYC, ensures that funded programs are well integrated into the mission of CUCE-NYC and aligned with the strategic visions of CCE, CALS and CHE, and fosters the partnerships between Cornell research and the communities that ground CUCE-NYC's work.

This position reports directly to the Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension. This position is based full-time in NYC, with occasional travel to the Ithaca campus.

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate with at least five (5) years research, outreach and administrative experience in nutrition, youth development, urban agriculture, or other related fields.
  • Substantive professional experience in university-based Extension, outreach, or non-formal education programs, as well as management or coordination of such programs.
  • Demonstrated skills and success in program leadership, management, grant-writing, budget development, and staff supervision.
  • Experience developing and providing Extension, outreach, or non-formal educational programs in partnership with diverse urban communities and organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and administering Extension programming in nutrition, health, youth development, parenting education, urban gardening, and/or STEM education.
  • Strong familiarity with NYC, including but not limited to experience working in partnership with diverse urban communities and organizations.
  • Experience interacting with elected officials.
  • Experience with government, policymaking, and/or communications.
  • Advanced language proficiency in Spanish and/or other locally spoken language or languages
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Enthusiastic about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
