Position Highlights |
Located on a 90-acre facility, the Henry G. "Hank" Grundstedt San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory is home to one of the most underground research labs in the country. The four-level mine is 250 feet at its deepest, and is the only mining lab with a working vertical shaft in the United States. The laboratory for research and training has been operated by the UA Department of Mining and Geological Engineering since 1958 and owned by the University of Arizona since 1975. We invite applications for an experienced professional to serve in the position of Mine Research Technnologist at the San Xavier Mining Laboratory. This position is responsible to prove full-scale underground mining equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for operation, diagnosing issues, and expert input towards the improvement of prototype equipment. This assignment is seasonal and will have fewer than six months of continuous work each year. During high workload periods, the selected candidate will be required to temporarily work up to 40 hours a week at a 1.0 FTE. During periods of low workload, the selected candidate will be placed into an on-call/part time role at a .025 FTE. Exemption status may be affected during these transitions. Activities at the lab complement Mining and Geological Engineering (MGE) courses and help students prepare for international mining competitions as well as jobs in the industry. Duties & Responsibilities |
- Manage the set up and operation of a variety of prototype underground mining equipment including LHD, roof bolters, and jumbo drills.
- Collaborate with mining engineers and other team members to provide
expert input during operation related to ergonomics, behavior in various strata and mines, general safety, and effectiveness. - Modify and monitor equipment performance and efficiency, making adjustments as needed.
- Ensure safety protocols and guidelines during all mining operations are adhered to by all personnel in the mine in regards to equipment being used.
- Stay informed about advancements in mining technology and equipment for continuous improvement.
- Perform workplace equipment examinations and ensure safe operation of prototype equipment.
- Rehabilitate workplace hazards and repair and replace damaged or worn parts.
- Work with research students to facilitate construction and implementation of experimental and protoype equipment underground.
- Loading of blasts, safe handling of explosives, and extension of mine services including power, water, and ventilation.
- Diagnose issues with equipment during unplanned and planned maintenance,
including maintenance requirement, system and component design. - Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities and equipment status.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of mining equipment, machinery, and associated technologies.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings.
- Ability to adhere to strict safety guidelines.
- Knowledgeable on regulations for the mining industry
- Ability to prioritize and correct issues in a timely manner.
- Strong computer, word processing, basic online systems and database management skills, including Microsoft Office.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in related field of study.
- Experience in underground hard rock mining, particularly operation of LHD, jumbo drills, and roof bolters.
- Experience handling explosives and ability to gain explosive handler status from ATF.
