Receiving/ Accessioning Technologist

General Summary of Position
Receives, logs in, verifies label accuracy, procedure(s), and specimen requirements, processes specimens appropriately, and sends specimens to appropriate section of lab or contractor. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards. Working hours for this role is 3pm-11:30pm Monday- Friday with weekend rotation

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives specimens for tests, verifies label accuracy, procedure(s) to be performed and testing requirements, determines sufficiency and quality of specimen, logs in specimen and appropriately processes same for delivery to appropriate section of lab or contractor.
  • Enters data into computer concerning time of collection and receipt, procedure and patient identity, and any other information, as required. Completes patient registrations and enters orders, as required.
  • Notifies supervisor, or appropriate laboratory or nursing unit personnel when specimens are damaged, contaminated or otherwise unsuitable for all tests to be performed and arranges for tests that could be performed with specimen or new specimen, as appropriate.
  • Prioritizes specimens and transports them promptly to the respective lab section.
  • Interacts with medical personnel and contractors to answer routine queries, and to obtain or clarify information.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly work environment and follows all safety and regulatory procedures for the assigned laboratory.
  • Performs and maintains preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Participates in identifying recurring testing, LIS, or workflow related issues and works with supervisor(s) to come up with solutions.
  • Participates in orientation, training, continuing education programs or other opportunities for learning for the department, medical staff and other Hospital staff as delegated.
  • Meets all career ladder requirements which includes the following:
  • Annual competency assessment reflects ability to successfully perform tasks in 90% of the bench assignments within the lab section.
  • On an annual basis, one of the following must be completed: serves as a section safety representative; manages section inventory; reviews & revises existing SOPs; manages section QC / QA; addresses section maintenance needs; or other assignments.
  • Completes 3 CEUs on an annual basis.
  • Annual competency assessment demonstrates competency to independently perform


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required or
    • the equivalent (GED). required

    Experience

    • 5-7 years 7 or more years laboratory experience preferred


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Able to learn and apply basic laboratory specimen processing techniques; able to learn or has a working knowledge of basic specimen requirements for a wide variety of laboratory tests.
    • Able to learn to work basic laboratory equipment and moderately complex computer functions.
    • Able to remain calm and function in stressful situations.
    • Clinical operations knowledge, medical terminology, excellent interpersonal communication skills, excellent customer service skills and telephone etiquette.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize workflow.

    This position has a hiring range of $22.04 - $38.41
