Position Highlights The Water Resources Research Center is seeking candidates for a GIS and Mapping Postdoctoral Research Scholar I. This candidate will work with partners, including local, state, nonprofit, private, sector, federal, and academic, to assist with the development of data analysis and mapping projects, including an update to the Arizona Water Map Poster. The candidate may work with Technical Advisory Committees to develop data analysis and visualization goals, use ArcGIS to perform data analysis and visualization, work with large datasets, and create maps using an iterative and co-productive design approach to communicate complex data and science to audiences ranging from subject matter experts to laypersons. The candidate will document data processing procedures for future use; develop long term data handling, use, and storage plans; create online platforms for visualizing and sharing data; and provide general advice to other projects on best practices. The candidate will also provide general mapping and data analysis support for other WRRC projects related to water resources and management as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

Project Development:

  • Work with Technical Advisory Committees and other stakeholders to understand questions and needs related to water resources and management;
  • Use iterative and co-productive approach to develop visualization strategies to communicate complex concepts and answer questions.

Data Analysis and Visualization:

  • Identify potential data sources to answer stakeholder needs, perform analysis of large and complex datasets, develop paper maps, digital maps, story maps, online hubs;
  • document data analysis methods and procedures for repeat, future use.

Communication and Reporting:

  • Communicate analysis results to diverse audiences ranging from general public to subject matter experts;
  • Prepare articles, bulletins, presentations, and other communication material based on project work.

General Support:

  • Develop and document data sharing agreements and long-term data storage plans;
  • Provide GIS subject matter expertise and advice in consultation to other projects.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Expertise in science communication to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written, oral, and visual.
  • Advance knowledge of ESRI suite.
  • Familiarity with water resources in the Southwest United States.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Water Resource Management, Natural Resources, Geography or related discipline upon hire.
  • Experience in advanced geospatial applications acquired through formal training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advance degree or certification in a relevant field such as geographic information systems, geospatial information science, etc.
  • Experience with at least one scripting language (e.g., Python)
  • Experience with large data sets, including aerial and satellite imagery data.
  • Experience with science communication.
  • Experience applying open access and open science principals.
