First (Days) (United States of America) Sentara is hiring a Team Lead, Surgical Assistant for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, in Norfolk, Virginia.

Shift:

Full Time

Rotating Day Shift

*Call required. Holidays and 8 calls a month

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Virginia Surgical Assistant License/Registration REQUIRED
  • National Certification REQUIRED
  • Completion of accredited Surgical Assistant program REQUIRED
  • 3 years Surgical Assistant experience REQUIRED
  • Leadership experience preferred
  • 5 years SA experience preferred

Additional Duties:

  • Lead the surgical assistants and by ensure proper coverage is available.
  • Responsible for creating work schedules and call schedules for the month.
  • Assist in orientation of new employees and check off competencies.
  • Assist in leading inservices monthly.

Job Summary

The Surgical Assistant, Team Leader works as a 1st or 2nd assistant to the surgeon and under the direction and supervision of that surgeon may perform specific significant surgical tasks. Functions as a team leader, preceptor and educator. The Team Leader is a working resource to the Surgical Assistant teams. The responsibilities include coordinating staffing and work assignments during the shift, real-time monitoring performance to ensure department standards and procedures are followed and researching and resolving the team's issues. They serve as point-of-contact to both internal and external customers for the assigned shift and address problems at the time they occur. The Team Leader also assists the Team Coordinator and department leadership as needed including, participating in the interviewing process, preparing and reviewing reports, performing QA audits, mentoring and training staff, managing department supply levels, and participating in meetings and workgroups.

Anticipating the needs of the surgical team, the Certified Surgical Assistant, Team Leader assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, set up of various tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts.

The Certified Surgical Assistant, Team Lead participates in the development and annual review of unit based clinical orientation guide; demonstrates proficiency in advanced skills (Examples may include: Performs harvesting of veins, proper preparation of an ACL graft, preparation of surgical mesh etc.); and serves as a mentor and role model to students, new employees, and fellow staff.

Graduate of CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited Surgical Assistant Program required. Graduate of medical school (foreign or domestic) may be substituted for education if currently certified or Credentialed as a Surgical Assistant or Surgical First Assistant issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, or the National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants or their successors in lieu of CAAHEP Surgical Assistant Program.

All current Virginia SAs and applicants must be certified and licensed through the Virginia Board of Medicine.

Demonstrates in depth clinical and technical skills in 3 surgical specialties and outstanding performance in 1 to 2 specialties with documented recognition by provider or leader.

3 years' experience as Certified Surgical Assistant required, 1 year as SA II at a Sentara facility.

Exemplary interdisciplinary teamwork skills and department improvement efforts.

Must be in good standing with organizational commitments (annual EPR of at least Exceeds Expectations, no corrective actions within one year)

Previous supervisor experience required

TS - Trade School Graduate: Surgical Assistant (Required) Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) RQI, Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) - Certifications - National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) Supervisory, Surgical Assistant
