Overview

Gilbane Building Company is seeking a dedicated Sustainability Specialist to drive our sustainability initiatives and contribute to our commitment to regenerative community building within the construction industry. As a Sustainability Professional, you will:

    Be at the forefront of leading sustainable practices within our organization, contributing significantly to our internal and external collaboration, alignment, and action.
  • Evaluate current sustainability practices, collecting and analyzing relevant data (e.g., waste, energy, water, carbon), strategizing for improvement, and implementing initiatives to bolster our sustainability efforts.
  • Play a key role in developing and implementing roadmaps to minimize environmental impact, enhance all types of resource efficiency, and promote best practices throughout our projects and operations.
  • This role will report to Gilbane's VP Director of Global Sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Support development and implementation of sustainability processes aligned with Gilbane's corporate objectives and industry best practices.
  • Share oversight of Sustainability Peer Groups, as prioritized by Director, to help accomplish key initiatives.
  • Assist with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data pertaining to environmental impact, resource consumption (g. water), carbon emissions (including Scopes 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory data), and waste generation.
  • Utilize advanced analytical tools and software to derive insights and identify trends crucial for sustainability decision-making. Support development of data handling processes and controls.
  • Support regular requests for sustainability from multiple sources and applications such as for business development and speaking engagements. This includes maintaining a list of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and co-developing an auditable tracking process (LEED APs, CEMs)
  • Support third-party verification/audits of environmental data and setting a GHG reduction target using the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
  • Assess Gilbane's sustainability performance against industry benchmarks and corporate targets.
  • Assist with submission requirements associated with external disclosure requirements (e.g., EcoVadis, CDP, MSCI, Sustainalytics).
  • Prepare internal and external reports and presentations to communicate progress, achievements, and areas for improvement in connection with Gilbane's strategic sustainability program. Ensure transparency and accountability in our sustainability efforts.
  • Contribute to the annual Sustainability Report or other reporting needs, as required.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on sustainability strategies and action plans. Propose, with support of Director, innovative initiatives aimed at reducing our environmental footprint and enhancing social responsibility.
  • Stay abreast of environmental and sustainability regulations and standards, ensuring compliance and adherence. Help develop and implement protocols to uphold our commitment to sustainability.
  • Work with project teams to innovate and implement new sustainable solutions to waste, carbon, and water.
    • Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and integrate renewable energy solutions into construction projects. Evaluate technologies, systems, and materials to optimize energy performance and reduce carbon footprint.
    • Develop waste management plans and initiatives to minimize construction waste and promote recycling and reuse of materials. Implement tracking and reporting systems to monitor waste diversion and achieve sustainability goals.
    • Develop water conservation strategies to track and reduce water use.
  • Provide education and training on sustainability initiatives and best practices by working with Gilbane University and other green SMEs within the organization. (e.g., LEED, EnergyStar, Passive, Living Buildings, EC3 etc.)
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and innovations in regenerative design and Assist with research and analysis to identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in sustainability practices. Identify key protocols for organizing enterprise data like Embodied Carbon in Construction (EC3 Tool), Green Badger etc.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders in our Businesses (offices and projects) to drive best practices, innovation, standard systems, and adoption.
  • Organize a list of green organization memberships enterprise wide and co-develop method to leverage value and share best practices from each.
  • Engage with key teams to ensure collaboration and innovation across project sites.
  • Assist with implementation and maintenance of Green Lease and Office Guidance requirements (including job site offices)
  • Assist in collaborating with Supply Chain / NEXT150 suppliers to identify sustainability best practices and engage subs in tracking and resource reduction programs.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in business, environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant certifications and experience (e.g., LEED AP, IECC, WELL, GRI, Living Buildings) are advantageous.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in sustainability, innovation, environmental management, or related field, preferably within the construction industry.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Technology savvy with the ability to learn and adapt quickly.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability concepts including GHG emissions, water use, carbon, and waste diversion.
  • Awareness of climate and sustainability regulations and requirements.
  • Solid understanding of green building standards and sustainability standards and frameworks (e.g., LEED, ISO 14001, EcoVadis, CDP, GHG Protocol, GRI, GRESB, SASB, TCFD, SBTi).
  • Experience in project management, including planning, implementation, and evaluation of new Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including ensuring deliverable deadlines are met.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and speaking), with the ability to effectively engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Analytical abilities, reporting, organizing, and archiving processes and deliverables.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment to achieve timelines while holding to high standards of excellence and a constant seeking for improvement.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products at an advanced level.
  • Commitment to sustainability and passion for driving positive change in the built environment.
  • Able to create and implement change quickly with empathy and team collaboration as well as a positive, proactive attitude/approach.

Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.

For Providence, RI and Columbus, OH this ranges from $84,900.00 - $116,700.00 plus benefits and retirement program.
For Chicago, IL this ranges from $88,900.00 - $122,200.00 plus benefits and retirement program.
For Boston, MA and Arlington, VA this ranges from $94,600.00 - $130,000.00 plus benefits and retirement program.
