The Community Education Specialist works on projects of diverse scope to include educational programs, support groups, community dissemination, engagement of historically marginalized communities, and serving as family faculty for our LEND program.
The Community Education Specialist must be knowledgeable about evidence-based practices for people with Developmental Disabilities (DD); California DD service delivery systems; community resources for support of people with DD and their families; independent living and community inclusion, and self- and family-advocacy; and culturally and linguistically appropriate service delivery.
The Community Education Specialist may also be asked to provide advice and support on research projects at the MIND Institute on community engagement, outreach to underserved communities, support for families of people with DD, cultural and linguistic competence, and translation of materials.
This position will support the following CEDD projects: Family Navigator program, Resource Center, Support Groups, Partnership with historically marginalized communities and LEND family trainees.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Working directly with families to provide support & help navigate the service system
- Coordinating program/project planning and implementation
- gathering and analyzing data to assess program/project effectiveness
- supervising family trainees in the LEND program
- preparing and editing presentations and dissemination documents
- preparing information for discussion in meetings using subject matter knowledge
- participating in research/outreach policy and program project planning and development

Minimum Qualifications: For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload their license, certification, and educational degree/diploma if required for the position
- Associates degree in Health & Human Services or closely related fields OR equivalent experience/training, with continuing education in a closely related field
- Experience with computer software including but not limited to: Onedrive, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email system, internet, Zoom, etc.
- Experience working independently and as part of a team
- Personal experience with disabilities (self or immediate family member)
- Extensive years of experience in working with people with DD in the Spanish-speaking or other diverse community
- Experienced professional with in-depth knowledge of evidence-based practices in prevention, assessment, treatment, and support services for people with developmental disabilities (DD); California DD service delivery systems (i.e., early intervention for ages 0-5, school-based, transition to adulthood, medical, education, mental health, etc.); community resources for support of people with DD and their families; independent living and community inclusion; personal and family resiliency, coping skills, and self- and family-advocacy; and culturally appropriate service delivery
- Cultural sensitivity to communities with disabilities
- Strong interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills, including presenting to large groups, and organizational skills
- Ability to collect outcome data for projects and programs and use data to strategically plan new projects, adapt current programs and provide programmatic recommendations
- Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality and use good judgment in responding to ussies and concerns
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Psychology, Special Education, Instructional Design or closely related field, OR equivalent experience with support/advocacy programs/ groups and state agencies in California associated with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities advocacy and training issues, including parent support
- Oral and Written Fluency in Spanish or other needed language and English

Department Overview
The MIND Institute is an interdisciplinary, collaborative research, clinical, and educational center committed to deepening our scientific understanding of the challenges associated with autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
The Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (CEDD) at the MIND Institute is one of 67 federally designated university centers (UCEDDs) across the country. The Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (CEDD) within the MIND Institute, collaborates with individuals with Developmental Disabilities (DD) and their families to improve quality of life and inclusion through advocacy, community partnerships, interdisciplinary training, and translation of research into culturally and linguistically relevant research and community applications. CEDD brings added resources to expand the activities and impact of the MIND Institute, serving as a resource in the areas of education, research and service, and providing a link between the university and the community to improve the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities. The CEDD works closely with our Leadership Education in Developmental Disabilities (LEND) program to provide graduate and post-graduate level, interdisciplinary leadership and service training program federally funded through HRSA's Maternal Child Health Bureau. The purpose of the LEND program is to provide interdisciplinary and leadership training to clinicians, families, self-advocates, and community leaders involved with developmental disabilities.
