The Packaging Engineer will report to the Sr. Product Engineer, Product Development with a primary responsibility to provide complete packaging design solutions, define and develop packaging technologies, and validate new & existing packaging solutions for Aspen Aerogels.

The Packaging Engineer will ensure that all packaging solutions are practical and efficient, allowing the product to be contained inside with proper labelling and protection to avoid damage during shipping, while meeting customer requirements. This role requires strong time management and organizations skills and must have the ability to manage multiple priorities, including balancing between activities to meet near term sample/prototype packaging requirements along with longer-term high-volume solutions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and validation testing.
  • Partner with Marketing, Program Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing to ensure that packaging solutions are developed on a timely basis for all customers.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials, and processes. Exhibit the ability to provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation.
  • Support in evaluating select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews and audits.
  • Speak about packaging designs clearly and succinctly with suppliers and customers.
  • Develop and define Aspen packaging development, testing, and validation processes.
  • Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
  • Work with manufacturing to ensure that packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.
  • Participate in the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Personally adhere to and monitor compliance with all safety procedures, policies, and maintain good housekeeping standards of team members.
  • Responsible for rapid prototyping packaging solutions.
  • Rely on data collection and analysis, experience, and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Support all packaging efforts from initial request for quote through final validation.
  • Ability to plan and execute projects and project timelines.



QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's degree in packaging engineering, mechanical engineering, or equivalent
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards ISO, ASTM, etc
  • Understanding of pallet and container optimization
  • Emotional Intelligence, situational awareness and ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software (Solidworks a plus)
  • Clear and concise communication skills, including verbal, written, presentation and negotiation
  • Fluent in Spanish (verbal and written) is a plus
  • Ability to travel 2-3 times per year (domestic with possibility of international travel)
  • Ability to keep workload organized and manage multiple due dates
  • Stong attention to detail
