This work will focus on the study of microbial communication in the human microbiome using in vitro microbiological and biochemical assays. Lab techniques performed by the Specialist include (but are not limited to): DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, microbial cultures, gram staining, metabolite extraction, and genetic manipulation of microorganisms. This position will involve experiments including bacterial culture (aerobic and anaerobic), molecular biology, gene expression analysis, protein gels, and performing other duties such as lab ordering/organization. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to novel projects advancing research and development of high-throughput in vitro assays to study microbial signaling molecules. An exceptional candidate will move these projects forward independently, helping the lab to develop and test new ideas. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, perform general lab duties, and be a positive lab citizen. General lab managerial tasks such as cataloging and ordering reagents are part of the position and other duties as assigned. In addition, independent research projects are available separate from the above-described duties.
