Join the premier Nurse Externship program at the #1 hospital in Wisconsin!

Program Dates May 27 - August 1, 2025

Nurse externs provide nursing care alongside a RN clinical coach during an 10-week clinical immersion program. This opportunity will enhance clinical knowledge and provide valuable, direct patient care experience at our Magnet-designated, academic medical center located in Madison, Wisconsin.

This program is intended for nursing students with expected graduation dates between December 2025 and June 2026. Current UW Health employees enrolled in associate or baccalaureate nursing programs are eligible to apply. All other applicants must be currently enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program.



  • 10-week, paid nurse externship program starting May 27, 2025.
  • Accepting applications between November 1, 2024 and January 6, 2025.


Program Highlights



  • Nurse externs gain experience in inpatient and/or ambulatory clinic / procedural departments throughout the Madison-based UW Health campus including University Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital, East Madison Hospital and regional clinic sites.
  • A wide variety of inpatient and outpatient departments host nurse externs in the summer. A nurse recruiter will discuss placement preferences during the interview. Department assignments will be announced at the time of offer.
  • Nurse externs will work alongside a RN clinical coach and will perform direct patient care and many other nursing duties on a daily basis.
  • We anticipate delivering offers throughout mid-February and March 2025.

Work Schedule:

90% FTE. 36 hours per week. Nurse extern schedules will be assigned based on the schedule of their RN Clinical Coach. 8 and/or 12-hour day/evening or day/night shifts with a weekend/holiday rotation may be required. Hours may vary based on the operational needs of the department.

Pay:

This is a paid externship. Shift differentials apply for PM, Night and weekend shifts.

Education:

Minimum -Current enrollment in a Baccalaureate Nursing program AND successful completion of two clinical courses as a nursing student prior to program start date.



  • UW Health Employees ONLY: Current enrollment in an Associate or Baccalaureate nursing program AND successful completion of two clinical courses as a nursing student prior to program start date.


Work Experience

  • Experience working in a patient care role (such as Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant) is preferred.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Current CPR/BLS Certification Upon Hire is required.
